Pistia stratiotes is a beautiful floating plant for open aquariums
and indoor ponds. It is easy to propagate by using runners. In Europe it can also be used as a summer plant in garden
ponds, but in the tropics it is regarded as a serious weed. It is also good
in traditional aquariums, where the fine, long, decorative roots provide
hiding-places for gouramies and other surface fish. If growth is good it must
be pruned to prevent it overshadowing the other plants.
