Audi A4/S4 B5/8D VAG-COM Info Updated  28 Mar. 2005

Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions. They are to be used at your own risk.

Specific Modules:

01-Engine: --  KWP-1281
VAG-COM works well with all engines available in the U.S. and most engines that users have tested in overseas markets.

Idle Speed Adaptation: With engine warmed up, at idle:

[Select]
[01 engine]
[Adaptation - 10]

Enter channel 01
Enter an adaptation value between 124 and 132
[Save

(May require a Login of 01283 or 11463, depending on year or model)

Throttle Body Adaptation:
Turn the key on but do not start the car.

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Measuring Blocks - 08]

Enter Group 060 (may be Group 098 on some cable-throttle cars)
[Go!]
[Switch to basic settings]

Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN 23523i83x . The TB
adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in basic mode for about 30 seconds, then switch back to normal settings and you're all set.

Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is N 23523i83x OT running when you do this!

02-Auto Trans :  -- KWP-1281

Recoding Tiptronic

In the newer cars, there are coding options for "Old" vs "N 23523i83x ew" "Tiptronic strategy". The "N 23523i83x ew" stategy (introduced in 2000 I think) is much more "automatic" than the old.  To get the "Old Tiptronic strategy" where it won't downshift unless you come to a complete stop, I believe you have to change the coding in the following manner:

[Select]
[02 - Auto Trans]
[Recode - 07]
Enter the coding below
[Do It!]

Write down the original coding for future reference.

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

0 or 1 - "N 23523i83x ew-style Tiptronic"
2 - "Old-style Tiptronic"

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Market version):

1 - "Rest of world, quattro"
2 - "USA, quattro"
3 - "Rest of world, FronTrak"
4 - "USA, FronTrak"

So, for a USA model A4 quattro, if the original coding is 00002, and you want to change to the "Old-style Tiptronic" strategy, change the coding to 00022.

PS: As always, you play with stuff like this at your own risk. The "old" strategy is documented by VW only for "testing" and they explictly say that the car should be recoded the way it was before giving it back to the customer.

Immobilizer II Instructions: Page 6

Immobilizer III Instructions: Page 7

N 23523i83x ote: US/Canada model Audi A4/S4 do not have Immobilizers.

Recode for warning lamps:

[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
[Recode - 07]

Write down the existing coding for future reference.
Enter 5-digit code from below
[Do It!]

Look at the first two digits in the coding. Add the values for the options together to get the correct coding.

00 - N 23523i83x o available equipment
+01 - Brakepad wear sensor warning active
+02 - Seatbelt warning active
+04 - Washer fluid level warning active (may only work with pre-2000 models)
+16 - N 23523i83x avigation System (non-USA models)

Look at the third digit in the coding (Market version):

0 - "Germany" 24 hour clock
1 - "Rest of World" 24 hour clock
2 - "USA" 12 hour clock
3 - "Canada" 12 hour clock

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

4 - 4-cylinder
6 - 6-cylinder

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Distance impulse multiplier):

0 - TDI Engine (non-USA models)
2 - N 23523i83x on-turbo Gasoline engine
4 - Turbocharged engine

So, if you want to have Seatbelt warning and washer fluid warning only in a 1999 Canadian A4 2.8, (add 00+02+04 = 06),3,6,2 = 06362.

Immobilizer 2 ECU Swapping Updated  29 Mar. 2005

Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions. They are to be used at your own risk. As always, you should refer to a Factory Repair Manual for your vehicle!

Immobilizer II:

The immobilizer will prevent the car from running without a matching key microchip. There is a symbol in the instrument cluster showing a key inside a car. If a new (or different ECU) is installed in the vehicle, the immobilizer will prevent the car from running and will cause the symbol to flash. Here is the procedure to introduce a new ECU to the instrument cluster. This must be performed each time ECU's are exchanged. This does not apply to installing a "chip" in the same ECU that is already aligned with the car.

Immo-3 knows your car's VIN 23523i83x . Access 17-Instruments (or separate 25-Immobilizer on vehicles that are set up that way) and look at the first "Extra" field.

If you see something like: "Immo-ID VWZ7Z0W0648696"  You've got Immo-2 (or maybe even Immo-1 in earlier non-US models).

If you see something like "WVZKB58001H231169 VWZ7Z0W0648696" You've got
Immo-3. The first 17-digit string is the VIN 23523i83x . The second 14-digit string in the Immo-ID.

Install the new ECU in the car
[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
[Adaptation - 10]

Leave channel at "00"
[Read]
[Save]

[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
[Exit]

Turn ignition OFF for 15 seconds. Start vehicle.

N 23523i83x ote: For cars with a separate Immobilizer (Includes 2000+ EuroVan, Cabrio, and many older non-US models), use [25 Immobilizer] instead of [17 - Instruments]. The rest of the procedure is the same.

Immobilizer Posted  10 May 2002

Immobilizer III:

Some 2001+ Volkswagen/Audi vehicles have Immobilizer III. This works similarly to Immobilizer II, except a secret key code (SKC) is required in order to perform the adaptation routine. The routine changes depending on whether you are using a BRAN 23523i83x D N 23523i83x EW ECU that has never been in any other car, or if you are using a USED ECU that has been previously matched to another car.

N 23523i83x EW:

Before Installing a  BRAN 23523i83x D N 23523i83x EW ECU in vehicle, get the ECM coding from the old ECU in the vehicle

Write down the 5-digit Soft. Coding
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

[17 - Instruments]
Write down the 14 digit Immobilizer ID number from the "Extra" field
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Bring that ID number to your dealer and request your seven-digit SKC

Install new ECU in the vehicle.

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Adaptation - 10]

Enter "50" in Channel N 23523i83x umber
[Read]
[Use 7-digit PIN 23523i83x /SKC]
Enter the 7-digit PIN 23523i83x , Date on which the PIN 23523i83x was GEN 23523i83x ERATED BY THE DEALER, along with the dealer's Workshop Code (WSC) and the Importer number
[OK]

VAG-COM will validate the data you have entered and return you to the Adaptation screen, where the N 23523i83x ew Value will show as "XXXXX" [Test] [Save]
[Done, Go Back]

Verify that the VIN 23523i83x now displayed in the "Extra" field matches the VIN 23523i83x on the vehicle code from dealer

[Done, Go Back]

Verify that the VIN 23523i83x now displayed in the "Extra" field in the Engine matches matches the VIN 23523i83x now displayed in the "Extra" field in the Instrument Cluster controller.

Turn ignition OFF and then back on within one minute, but do not start vehicle for two minutes
After 2 minutes, start the vehicle

[Select]
[01 - Engine]

Audi Service Interval Reminders Updated  29 Mar. 2005

Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions. They are to be used at your own risk.

Audi has included a Service Interval Reminder that includes oil mileage interval, the service mileage interval, and the service time interval. To reset the Service Reminders using VAG-COM:

Select Control Module > [Select
[17 - Instruments]
[Adaptation - 10]

1995-1997 (and maybe part of 98):

Channel 05 should be the distance until the next Oil Service.
It is in thousands of kilometers. Let's say you want the Oil
Service light to come on in 5000 miles. That would be 8000 km.
Put  the value 8 into channel 05. The "standard value" used by the US
dealers would be 12 (7500 miles).

Channel 06 should be the distance until the next In-1 Service.
Same units as above. Standard value would be 24 (15,000 miles).

Channel 07 should be the time until the next In-1. In-1 lights
up based on time or distance, whichever comes first. This is in
10's of days. Standard value would be 36 for 360 days.

Channel 08 would be time until the next In-2. In-2 is based
strictly on time. Standard value is 72 for 720 days (about
two years).

1998 and N 23523i83x ewer:

Channel 02 - set to 0 to reset
