Tutorial: How to Build a Flash Animation
The newtelligence Flash screen saver: A tutorial dedicated to beginners in Flash animation.
Preparation
This tutorial uses our logo as an example. You may download the .FLA files and the Adobe
Illustrator file, containing the arrows, for convenience if you like:
A little background
We chose to create the logo's arrow elements outside of Flash and later import them as it made animating them easier. The text elements were all created using Flash. In general, you may create your custom graphics using Flash or another vector based illustration program that
supports layers and from which Flash can import. For example: Freehand, Illustrator and Corel
Draw.
If you use any other tool, remember that each piece of you logo that you wish to animate must be placed on a separate layer.
Assumption
At this point I assume that you have imported the arrows from the Illustrator file and positioned them. Now you are ready to animate!
Animation
Flash makes it easy to make things happen" but your goal is, obviously, to capture your audience; engage them so they anxiously await what comes next!
Try to think of yourself as a storyteller and your animation as the tale. There is opening, a middle
full of action, drama, romance or whatever you pleasure!) and a conclusion.
Arrows
In the newtelligence screensaver story, the opening is comprised of the rising arrows, so we begin there
The goal is to make the arrows look like they are growing in place but this could not be done in
the direct way - the result was unacceptable. The solution is to use additional layers, each with a masking rectangle that uses the background color. Each rectangle is used to cover a different
arrow in the first frame of the animation and is slowly "retracted" to make it appear as if the
arrows are rising. You will need to tweak the animation speed for the arrows, as well as choosing the last frame - when the arrow is completely visible.
