Lesson Plan



Teacher: Ple[a Ramona

Class type: elementary level pupils (2nd grade students)

Frequency: 1 hour/week; 45'/hour

Textbook: The teacher has used an additional material: Children's Picture Dictionary & Teacher's Resource book, Longman

Type of lesson: acquiring new information (Vocabulary)

Skills: Reading, Speaking, Listening

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to get the children acquainted with the names of vegetables in a fun way by 'organizing a party'. At this party the children themselves play the roles of vegetables.

Lesson Aims:

to raise interest  in the topic

to relate to their daily life; to promote discussion

to help the students to identify and name vegetables

to enable the students to use expressions such as "I am ." in order to introduce themselves

to enable the students to play a role: a vegetable

to identify and name the colour of the vegetable they represent

to use simple questions and answers

to follow simple instructions

to use Present Simple and Continuous in simple statements

to practice the names of vegetables by singing a song

Didactic strategies:

  • methods and procedures: conversation, explanation, dialogues, identifying/naming things;
  • materials and equipment: textbook, drawing board, handouts, pictures, flash cards with colours, CD player, CDs, drawings done by the children as a homework (in order to familiarize themselves with the vegetables that they are to represent)
  • organization: class work, group work, individual work;

PROCEDURE

Recent work  The students have been studying:

  • ways to introduce themselves: "I am .", "My name is ."
  • the basic colours: red, white, green, grey, black, purple, orange, yellow, brown, blue
  • the names of vegetables
  • They have been preparing for the party by working on the sheets of paper which they represent. They have also made coloured hats with drawings on them to get into the party atmosphere.
  • The teacher has been telling them things about the party in order to make them feel excited, looking forward for the class and interested in the topic.

Warm-up Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-T Timing: 5'

Speaking

Aim 1: to create interest in the topic: vegetables

Aim 2: to relate to their daily life; to promote discussion

* The teacher has arranged the desks in a semi-circle so as to create a different atmosphere then the usual: a party

  • T. introduces the topic by discussing about vegetables in Romanian. She asks them questions about what they eat, if they like vegetables and if they know their colours.
  • T. points to the flashcards that she has previously stuck on the blackboard asking the Ss to identify them.

Activity 1 Interaction :T-Ss; Ss-T Timing: 10'

Listening & Reading

Aim 3: to help them identify/name vegetables by listening to a CD

  • T. points to the drawing board on the blackboard and asks Ss to read the title of the lesson: A Vegetable Party
  • T distributes the handouts - xerox copies of the drawing on the blackboard
  • T. asks the Ss to pay attention to the numbers and pictures in the square
  • T. introduces the vocabulary using the CD as a pronunciation model; Ss follow and repeat

Activity 2  Interaction: individual work; S- Ss; T-S Timing: 10' Speaking

Aim 4: to enable the Ss to use expressions such as: "I am .", in order to introduce themselves

Aim 5: to enable them to play a role

Aim 6: to identify/name the colour of the vegetables they represent

  • T. asks the Ss to present themselves as the guests at the party
  • T. asks the Ss to say the colours of the 'veggies'

( eg. " I am a carrot. I am orange.

I am a potato. I am brown.")

Activity 3  Interaction: group work Timing: 10'

Speaking

Aim 7: to use simple questions and answers

Aim 8: to follow simple instructions

Aim 9: to use Present Simple and Continuous in simple statements

  • T. asks the Ss to stand up in a circle
  • T. asks questions: "How many green vegetables are at our party?"

How many orange vegetables are at the party?"

  • T. asks the Ss to separate by colours
  • T . asks the Ss to look at the handout and say: "Who's singing?"

The broccoli answers: "I am singing!"

"Who's dancing?"

The eggplant answers: "I am dancing!"

"Who's playing music?"

The cabbage answers: "I am playing music!"

Activity 4  Interaction: group work Timing: 10'

Listening & Speaking

Aim 10: to practice the names of vegetables by singing a song: The Vegetable Song

  • T. encourages Ss to listen to a song and try to remember it
  • T plays the CD and asks the student to sing along
  • T. plays the CD again

Ending the lesson: Teacher and students end the lesson in a partylike atmosphere! She praises all the students for their participation and tells them to prepare for A fruit party!
