Arguments FOR and AGAINST Wearing School Uniforms.

School uniforms are nowadays out of fashion, although it is still widespread in private schools. Romania has a long tradition of school uniforms and is the country where uniforms were frequently worn in the communism regime. Nowadays is totally different.

Firstly, a typical uniform consist of dark pants or shorts for boys, skirt for girls, and a shirt or a blouse. Clothes are an expression of who we are, and at a young age, it's important to develop confidence and self - expression. Many schools feel that one way to stop violence and some of behavior problems is to assign a school uniform.

Secondly, the most common argument in favor of school uniforms seems to be regarding discipline, the school uniforms encourage the students to focus on studying. The differences between rich and poor students will not be visible. That could cause embarrassment among students. Another conceivable argument is that by denying students to wear gang related symbols or badges, school uniforms can be used as a tool to reduce gangs. School uniforms also reduce the pressure for students to wear expensive brands of clothes.

Thirdly there are arguments against wearing school uniforms. The main argument against school uniforms is that they violate students right to individualism and freedom of expression, including the prohibition of jewelry and makeup. Students might also feel uncomfortable and inferior to the staff and other people in their surroundings who don't have to wear an uniform.

Furthermore, to dictate students clothing could be seen as a declaration of young people incapacity and may also discourage their creativity. If school uniforms are mandatory, parents have to buy two sets of clothes for school and other sets for spare time and weekends. In conclusion, we should have school uniforms because overall they help to make school a better place. Uniforms help to eliminate economical barriers, help to reduce violence in the schools, and help in raising students  knowledge.
