DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT MRI/CT
BAND: 2
RESPONSIBLE
TO: SUPERINTENDENT RADIOGRAPHER FOR AREA
ACCOUNTABLE TO: HEAD OF DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING
SERVICES
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION A minimum of NVQII in health and social care or
equivalent experience. Plus basic mathematical skills e.g. division, multiplication
percentages, means and averages.
JOB SUMMARY
- To work under supervision as part of a
specialist radiographic team, to assist in providing a CT and MRI service
in an efficient, caring and supportive manner.
- To prepare both equipment and patients
prior to scanning. To support the radiographer and radiologist during the
course of the scanning lists.
- Maintain the highest possible standards, with due regard for the Trusts Health and
Safety and Radiation Protection Policies.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure a thorough working knowledge of the Trust's and Department's Policies and
Procedures. In particular National
Legislation relating to Radiation Protection i.e. IR(ME)R 2000's
Employer's Procedures and IRR99.
- Ensure that all w 10310p158k ork is carried out n a
safe manner with regard to other staff groups (e.g. ward nurses, doctors
and patient carers) by ensuring adherence to the Ionising Radiation
Regulations 99 Local Rules and department safety procedures.
- Using verbal and non-verbal skills,
communicate effectively to all groups of patients, including patients with
special needs e.g. learning difficulties, dysphasic, aggressive and non co-operative patients.
- Establish patient identity (as per
Employer's Procedures), allergy status, current
medication and for women of child bearing age the date of the last
menstrual period. Ensure all
information is accurately communicated to the radiographer in charge of
the case.
- Risk assess using clinical judgement, in the limited time
available the patients level of ability and co-operation to determine the
manual handling procedures to be used and the extent of pre examination
compliance (i.e. oral preps) and to communicate this with senior
radiographer.
Be thoroughly familiar with all aspects of patient's preparation for CT
and MRI examinations, able to advise relevant staff, patients and carers as
appropriate on the requirements of the examination and any aftercare.
Develop and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base in regards to patient
preparation in line with development of contrast agents and equipment. e.g. Calogen
contains nuts so must be included in allergy check.
Use relevant manual handling techniques to place patients on the CT and MRI
scanners for the examination as directed by the senior radiographer.
- Be fully conversant with the workings of
the Medrad pressure injector, and able to terminate it's
operation as soon as a problem is identified.
- Prepare patient and equipment for IV
cannulation, biopsy or colonogram procedures i.e. ensure patient is fully
informed and that all relevant checks have been carried out inclusive of
ID and allergy and that all equipment is available and fit for use.
- Monitor patient and venflon site during
pressure injection to check for adverse reaction or incorrect siting of
venflon and immediately terminate process if required.
- Assist radiographers to follow the department
policy for the "double check" system to ensure the CT scan is required.
- On reception of MRI patients check and
discuss the patient's completed Safety Questionnaire and communicate all
relevant information to the radiographer in charge of the procedure. e.g. metal in the eye or a cardiac pacemaker.
- Prepare oral contrast agents to the
Department's Procedures prior to abdominal scanning and give to patient or
take to ward as appropriate. e.g. mix of barium sulphate, Urografin, Calogen etc
with water, or sometimes sterile water.
- Carry out daily mandatory MRI Quality
Assurance checks using the appropriate specialist QA tool.
- Using the department procedures manually
calculate the frequency, signal and mean dose from the MRI Quality
Assurance test, and record in the designated place.
- Collect from Clinical Chemistry on HISS
the most recent INR for biopsy patients and the blood urea and creatinines
for contrast patients and communicate following the department policy to
the radiologist in charge of the procedure.
- Ensure that film bags are documented
correctly and that films are distributed following the department's Film
Handling Policy.
- Liaise and communicate with patients,
carers, hospital and department staff to ensure that appointment times are
met and that appropriate care is delivered to patient and on time. thus ensuring
the efficient and effective use of available resources.
- Participate in Service Improvement
Projects and suggest changes as appropriate.
- To show a commitment to life long learning
and keep abreast of new developments in CT and MRI
- To maintain a safe environment for
patients and staff, and to ensure that hygiene levels and stocks are
maintained in line with departmental recommendations.
- To be thoroughly familiar with the
trusts IT system and accurately document relevant information of own work
according to departments policy.
