Andy Thomas, Artist

Artist Profile

Andy Thomas was raised in the small town of Carthage, Missouri. As a young boy, Andy always had an interest in art and would spend hours drawing and painting.

Andy developed a strong interest in histor 20520d315u y as he grew and it was only natural that he would eventually combine art and history. His passion for both show in his Civil War artwork.

In 1993, Andy completed a landmark mural depicting "The Battle of Carthage" which took place in Carthage, Missouri on July 5, 1861. It was executed during the time when many historical researchers were documenting the actual battle in many historical writings. The mural boasts complete accuracy and is the focal point of the museum. The limited edition prints of the mural were completely sold out in one year's time. This may tell you a little about the impact of the mural itself.

In addition to the Battle of Carthage, Andy has painted "Don't Give an Inch" which signifies the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri. He has also completed "On the Battery", which brings to life the battle surrounding Elkhorn Tavern in Pea Ridge, Arkansas. He has recently completed the Battle of Westport which recreates Gen. Jo Shelby and his men in the Westport area of Kansas City. This it the fourth in the Trans-Mississippi Series. The series will include many of the Civil War battles that took place west of the Mississippi River.

Painting originals is Andy's prime goal as an artist. Due to his love of art and incredible interest in our history, he had done oils on historical subjects such as "The Sinking of the Alabama", "Jeb Stuart", "Haussenduebel's Charge", "The HMS Victory", "Custer's Stand", and "George Washington at Monmouth Courthouse".

Throughout the years he has had the opportunity to have his paintings cover such books as "Jeb Stuart", "Civil War in the Ozarks", "Civil War in Indian Territory", "Civil War in Texas and New Mexico Territory", and the latest "Carthage". In addition to the fine cover work, Andy has also illustrated some of these books.

In addition to the portentous oils that Andy creates, he produces prominent sculptures that capture the essence of history. "Strike the Tents" is a lost wax bronze of General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee. This sculpture has unimaginable detail and a remarkable resemblance to the men.

The uniqueness of Andy lies in the fact that yes, he does produce outstanding, accurately researched historical paintings but he also can cover the canvas with a gentle still life, children playing baseball or maybe a sailboat on the sea. His diversity of subject matter is uncanny. He dedicates his life to his immense drive to succeed to the ultimate goal of attaining national recognition throughout many years to come.
