The FBI, CIA, and ATF

The United States Department of Justice and Treasury Departments have three major agencies. These three agencies are the FBI, CIA, and ATF. The three agencies come together to fight crime.

Attorney General Charles J. Bonaparte originated the FBI in 1908. Its first name was the Bureau of Investigation. J. Edgar Hoover became the first director after the reorganization in 1924. The Bureau of Investigation earned the 555u202f name Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) in 1935.

In addition to the headquarters in Washington D.C., there are 58 other offices in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

The FBI's jurisdiction extends to over 180 matters. These include bank robbery, extortion, racketeering, kidnapping, antitrust violations and drug enforcement. The training program teaches agents techniques in scientific investigation and crime detection. Applicants must be between the ages of 23 and 40. They must graduate from a state-accredited law school or a resident 4-year college with an accounting major and at least three years of work in this field.

President Harry S. Truman and the National Security Council established the CIA in 1947. The CIA's original mission was to gather primary intelligence. After communist take-overs in the eastern half of Europe and China, the National Security Council directed that the agency should participate in politics, covert psychology, paramilitary and economic requirements. The US fighting in the Korean War gave the CIA more work to help the combat forces. The first major CIA reorganization happened between 1950 and 1955. Towards the end of 1961, the CIA reorganized again to put more emphasis on science, technology and internal management.

The Central Intelligence Agency is responsible for counter-espionage. Its mission is to stop the placement of foreign agents in the United States agencies. In the United States, this work is coordinated with the FBI.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is the youngest tax-collecting agency. Alexander Hamilton founded it in 1789. It is separate from the IRS by the Treasury Department number 120-1. In 1789 the Constitution and the first Congress imposed a tax on imported goods. It was to offset a part of the Revolutionary War debt. By the act of 1^st July 1862, Congress created an office of internal revenue inside the treasury department. Taxing people often causes resistance to such laws. In 1863, Congress authorized the hiring of three detectives to aid the prevention of resistance. In 1875, federal investigators broke up the Whiskey Ring. The Whiskey Ring was a dealer of grain.

In the alcohol industry, the ATF regulates the qualifications and operations of distilleries, wineries and breweries. They also regulate the people who buy alcohol so they are protected by many functions. The National Laboratory Center (NLC) is the tester of products entering the market.

The ATF ensures the collection of tobacco taxes. It also qualifies people to import tobacco products. Inspections verify the importer's qualifications.

The ATF recognizes the role firearms play in crimes. Investigation is centered on people who spend their life committing crime. To stop the illegal use of firearms, the ATF issues license.

The ATF has a known record in labs back to 1886. In 1999, the ATF analyzed 7,230 alcohol and tobacco samples, processed 7,973 alcohol product applications, 2,673 forensic cases, 176 days providing expert testimony in the courts, spent 324 days at crime scenes, responded to 42 National Response Team Activations, and spent 397 days training Federal, State and Local investigators.

My conclusion to this essay is that these agencies work as hard as they can to keep the streets safe. They try to make sure people are not hurt by evil crimes.
