Many people consider that television - certain programmes, anyway - influences people, teenagers especially, in a negative way. What do you think? Support your opinions with arguments.
Of all the media, television seems to have the greatest impact. Many people think it influence people, especially teenagers, in a negative way. And they are right. The young people dedicate less time to their hobbies, they don't go out so often, they have given up going to theatres, cinemas or sporting events. Not to mention reading books or listening to music. All their free time seems to be controlled by television.
For the sake of a programme, even meals are neglected or replaced by a sandwich.
The family no longer sit at table and exchange the news of the day. Thus communication among the members of the family is broken. This leads to the alienation of the individual. Food is left uneaten, homework undone, sleep is lost.
The most dangerous 848h719i aspect is that teenagers watch spectacles of sadism and violence, explicite sex, which cannot but distort their perception of what is normal.
Television encourages passive enjoyment, it cuts people off from the real world. Young people are offered second-hand experiences instead of being sent out in the world itself.
On the other hand television is the best source of news, fast and accurate information from any corner of the world. Never before has communication been better.
Television provides information, knowledge from all fields, entertainment, political debates, music of all kinds, for all tastes. Used wisely, with discernment and parental guidance, television can really change young people's life for the better.
Watching TV is a waste of time only if you cannot tell what's instructive from what is character deforming. But if you are able to be selective enough to watch only what is useful, without replacing reading and learning, I think nobody can blame you for spending some time in front of the TV-set.

In the high summer- tide, I remember with a strange feeling that there are people who, of their free choice, spend day and night in cities, who throng to the gabble of drawing- rooms, make festive in public eating - houses, sweat in the glare of the theatre. They call it life; they call it enjoyment. Why, so it is, for them; they are so made. The folly is mine, to wonder that they fulfil their destiny.
But with what a deep and quiet thanksgiving do I remind myself that never shall I mingle with that well- millinered and tailored herd! Happily, I never saw much of them. Certain occasions I recall when a supposed necessity took me into their dismal precincts; a sick buzzing in the brain, a languor as of exhausted limbs, comes upon me with the memory. The relief with which I stepped out in the street again, when all was over! Dear to me was the poverty, which for the moment seemed to make me a free man. Dear to me was the labour at my desk, which, by comparison, enabled me to respect myself.
Never again shall I shake hands with a man or a woman who is not in truth my friend.
All men my brothers? Nay, thank Heaven, that they are not! I will do harm, if I can help it, to no one; I will wish good to all; but I will make no pretence of personal kindliness where, in the nature of things, it cannot be felt.
Characterize your generation of teenagers. Refer to their clothing, behaviour, interests, beliefs and ideals and point to what is different about you in comparison with the previous generation(s).
We speak today of "the global teenager". This means that there are no major differences in the life-styles of young people all over the world. They dress the same - jeans, T-shirts or sweaters, backpacks - they go to discos, carry walkmans, enjoy going out in groups.
English is their common language, it is the way in which teenagers across the world can communicate with each other and share a common culture.
The strongest force in international youth culture today is pop music.
Music has universal appeal. The popularity of the satellite TV channel MTV is evidence of this: their pop videos play in every corner of the planet.
Teenagers love computers. Young people around the globe are beginning to hang around together on the Internet as they used to on the street.
Young people from all over the world like the same things and have similar tastes. They may be under the influence of the media, fashion designers, showbiz stars, the music they listen to, the TV programmes they watch.
It is also true that young people's tastes influence the design of clothes and cars, consequently, whole industries are appearing to help teenagers spend their free time - and their money.
People also speak about "stereotypical" teenage behaviour: teenagers don't value education, they waste money, criticize their parents or argue with them, they are rebels, they smoke, drink, use drugs.
In my opinion, it is unfair to make such generalizations. Many teenagers are successful students, have strong friendships and good relationships with their parents.
They don't smoke, drink or take drugs, they don't even swear.
I must admit there is a "typical teenager", but it is also true that teenagers do not always conform to the same style.
The fragment is a literary one with a wider meaning than the simple idyllic description.
Firstly, the text sounds like a confession: a young man experienced two sets of curious and amazing events in the past and is now living on an idyllic beach in a refurbished house, alone but no lonely. He needs time to recover, to understand what had really happened to him and decide to restart his life in the world again.
The first paragraph sets the scene: it is a magnificent description of the house on the beach, with the sliding doors looking on a wide sundeck, the garden with sand patchy grass, a vegetable plot and brilliant flowers.
The image enlarges in the second paragraph. Similar to a blown-up photo, the whole place gets perspective: we see the village behind the palm trees, the poor town of mud huts and cottages next to the symbol of civilization, the main road to the airport. That is to say that the reclusive life is chosen, not imposed. The writer goes on with the introspection: living alone does not necessarily mean loneliness, as the sound of the life around him prevents him from feeling isolated.
Moreover, the character asks some rhetorical
questions as to what he is doing there in spite of his academic qualifications
and a family in
Finally the answer comes in the last paragraph with the explanation. The character voices his dilemma and expresses his belief that it could be a temporary halt he has taken to properly understand what happened to him and then to be able to restart his life in the world. He addresses the reader directly. "Do you know that feeling?" thus making us feel involved in his torment.
I think all of us have transient periods of seclusion, when we try to understand our destiny and choose the best way to take in life. Alienation is specific of modern times, but I like the optimistic tone of the line: "before I can restart my life in the world".
No matter what, we always have the chance to go back to the civilized world and its problems and start all over again, afresh.
Talk about the uses and abuses of advertising. Support your opinion with examples and arguments.
I think that not always these things are so bad. It is true that the advertisements and commercials are omnipresent but sometimes they can be useful. Most of the new products could remain unknown for us if the advertisements weren't. For instance, I discovered many useful things from them ( like a good perfume or a new detergent, or a new shop with low prices.
It is also true that there are many other stupid advertisements and they sell products of doubtful quality. But as they say the advertisements is the soul of trade. Many of products are sold only because of the commercials.
Moreover the advertisements and commercials became a financial means for television, radio, and newspapers.
By the other hand there are many advertisements which reveal the intelligence and creativity of the people who made them. Some of them are quite funny and interesting like the advertisements for Coca -Cola, Sprite and the advertisements for cars and phones services.
Television commercials are very efficient because they have a wide audience: they are broadcast at peak hours, or are inserted in programs that are watched by a great number of people: talk-shows, good films. There are different ways by which these ads can have an impact upon the viewer: short dramatizations, demonstrations of the quality of the product or how to use it; there are slogans and jingles, specially created to catch the listener or surprising images which often have nothing to do with the product.
No matter what the means are, the end is selling the product by convincing he audience that it is the best.
The information or misinformation we want our clothes to convey about status, age, occupation, opinion, mood and taste may make it hard for us to decide what to wear. What often happens in such cases is that the outer layer represents the external or public person and the inner one, his or her private self. When both layers are visible, the message, though contradictory, is easy to read.
Many combinations of outer and inner massage are possible. A costume may be childish without (=outside) and adult within (=inside), like the bright apron over severe dark dress which informs guests that a serious career woman is only playing at cooking. It may be casual and countrified without and citified within, like the tan cord suit of the architect worn with a business shirt and tie to reassure his clients that their buildings will not run over the cost estimate or fall down.
Even when the styles of the inner and outer layer are the same, there may be a significant difference in colour. When a colour combination is conventional, its meaning is conventional rather than personal. The wearing of a white shirt with a dark suit means this character type has always been considered desirable in business and the professions. The reverse outfit - the gambler's white suit and dark shirt - suggests someone whose character and motives are somewhat shady, whatever the lightness and charm of his manners.
Broadly speaking, volunteering means unpaid work done for the benefit of community, for society as a whole. What is the attitude of most Romanians towards volunteering?
What I now about volunteering is related to the American volunteers from Peace Corps. I met the first volunteer that came to Rosiori and I talked to her. Her name is Maria Alfano. In the beginning it was difficult for me to understand why this girl
left her country, her family, and a living standard which is a dream for many of us, to come and spend two years of her youth in such an uninteresting town as Rosiori. I talked to her as I said, several times, and I was surprised to see that she was not bored in Rosiori. She appreciated the warmth and hospitality of the Romanians, that she was open to know our culture, our customs. She was here to help students improve their English, but not only for that. She tried to make us know their culture, their way of thinking, their values. She has a sense of duty and a sense of work, which many of the Romanians don't quite have.
And I asked myself: would I be able to do what she did? Would I go in an environment offering worse conditions than those I am used to, to help people in that environment - for nothing or almost nothing? Because her salaries, here, were not higher than the usual salary of a Romanian teacher. Would I accept, for instance, to spend one month in a gypsy community, to share their way of life and try - in a delicate way - to change things for the better for them? And, honestly, I don't think I would. On the other hand, I don't consider myself more selfish than the other people. What I do think, is that the most Romanians would refuse volunteering. I think we are too poor for volunteering. We are too much concerned with our every day problems, they take too much of our time and energy. People who lead a decent life, with certain living standards, can be generous. People who try hard to bring the everyday bread to their family and this everyday bread id still hard to get, can't afford being generous, though they may be very humane, very sensitive and understanding. This is not an excuse, of course. I don't mean to say that, when somebody is poor, he must only expect to be helped by the others without helping the others in his turn. In fact, there are many levels of helping, many ways in which we can help.
Describe an ideal person/ your model in life
They say that everyone has a model in his life; either this model is an actor, a successful businessman or one of the parents, a relative or a hero taken from books. We all need a challenge to get better - and what other challenge can be better than a model someone who seems to us the closest to the ideal of what we would like to be.
As strange as this might seem, my model in life is neither a real successful person (actor, businessman, woman with a career), nor an imaginary hero taken from books or movies. What I consider to be my model is more of a wish, a dream.it's an ideal me. This must sound terribly selfish, but you'll understand what I mean if you try to follow me in my imaginary world - a world made up fears, and hopes and thoughts.just like any other inner world, so often ignored by people.
Of course, it comes natural to find our model in the outer world, to want to be like someone we really love and admire. But, as I've often seen, sooner or later, we realize that either our hero is less than he seemed to be, or we are not able to be like him. So, to protect myself against disappointment I built a model improving the image of someone I knew best: myself.
Analysing my qualities and defects I've got my real image. And I have to admit that I wasn't too proud of it. But, little by little the image got better. The ideal became more and more clear in my mind, helping me to improve my behaviour. I have a goal now - to be just like my model: understanding and kind-hearted, always finding reasons to laugh or to smile. And even when reality proves to be so much less than we expect, my model finds the strength to dream, to hope for the better. Life is a challenge for her, the most beautiful adventure! She follows her way in life, letting nothing disturb her. Fighting all the negative feelings like hatred, guilt, jealousy. Her goal is to find the real meaning of freedom, without destroying its essence, to learn to respect herself and the others, to understand more than the selfish past or present.
How can you explain that, despite the great scientific and technological achievements, there are many people today who still believe in superstitions?
Despite the fact society has evolved to such a level that anything that was considered a 'miracle' in the past can now be scientifically explained, many people still believe in ancient superstitions and witchcraft.
Superstitions seem to be a way to blame somebody else when one fails to achieve a goal.
Many tend to think that having a lucky object on them will protect them against unwanted surprises or accidents. If something goes wrong when you happen to have forgotten your talisman at home you tend to think that caused your failure or accident.
For example some people have a rabbit foot on their key ring for luck. In some countries ( Islamic, African, and Asian ones ) you can buy from a so called 'shaman' an object to protect you from illness or bad luck.
In Eastern Asia (particularly in
If we analyse things a little deeper, we can see that every superstition has a reasonable explanation. If you go under a ladder and a bucket falls in front of you, it is not because you are unlucky but because the wind must have blown a little harder and caused the bucket to fall.
Although it seems stupid that at the dawn of the 21-st century people still believe that wearing a lucky red baseball cap while paying poker will make you win for sure, we have to admit that there are some things that happen and we simply cannot explain why.
So maybe we should look closely into this kind of phenomena as there must be something reasonable that could explain them.

With a good system of irrigation, with modern tools and fertilizers, and of course with hard work, Romanian agriculture could indeed not only cover the needs of the country, but could also sell agricultural products abroad.
Then, our forests. Now that many people became the owners of the forests, trees are cut for their own benefit, without respecting any plan, which will lead to the destruction of the forest with incalculable effects in the future.
Even the beauty of our country is inefficiently

And I suppose there are many other examples of the same kind about the way the Romanian natural resources are exploited.
Make your own portrait - mention both qualities and defects. Do you think that the others see you as you really are?
I don't know. I find it difficult to speak about myself. I am an ordinary person, anyway. I am rather lazy, at least my father says that. I am not able to work for long, I can't concentrate on the same thing for hours. If I am attentive, I understand explanations, - lessons in general - pretty quickly. I don't quite read, but I suppose this is general situation, most teenagers read less and less. I am not very punctual. I am pretty slow in doing things. Sometimes I talk too much, especially when the interlocutor is friendly. I let myself influenced by the others very easily. By friends, of course.
OK, now let me talk about my good points: I have the sense of humour, though sometimes it is black humour.
Some people may appreciate that, some don't. I am friendly and committed to my friends, I am ready to help them whenever they ask.
I don't like fights, violence, quarreling. If someone says something mean about me, I get mad at first but soon I forget and I forgive.
I don't think the others see me the way I see myself. I suppose there are a few who incline to see me better than I am - my girlfriend, my parents, my grandparents.
But I think the others see me worse than I am, because they don't know me, they are not even interested in knowing me the way I am, and they assume I am a way or another. I heard, for instance, that I am boastful and arrogant. Sometimes I may be boastful, I agree, but I am definitely not arrogant. I am pretty modest and I am not rude. The few friends I have know the way I am and they seem to like me.
Things that happen in real life are often stranger or more surprising than things that happen in stories. Enlarge upon this idea and refer to examples from your own life experience or from the books you have read.
If we think that stories, novels, literature in general, and movies also, are inspired from life, then obviously life must provide a very rich material from which the author chooses what he considers interesting. Not only fiction, but science-fiction as well are inspired from life. Life is various and multiple, and offers many more facts and situations than individual can produce I his imagination. Only, the extraordinary fact or situation does not happen everyday around us. That is why literature or movies can surprise us through the situations they present. That life offers more surprises than literature, there are plenty of examples on television. All you have to do is to watch a show like "Surprises, surprises", or "Forgive-me". You'll find out plenty of unbelievable situations, and what is most unbelievable is how those people accepted to make their cases public.
To what extent the modern means of communication altered the pattern of people's traditional way of life in the past century? Give examples of both positive and negative aspects.
Obviously, modern communication technology affects the traditional system of education. Modern communication technology includes the cell phones, the fax, the Internet with tele-conferencing and video-conferencing. Communication is rapid - I would say immediate - and accurate. Self phones provide first of all a great independence - people are no longer dependant on the fix phone, the interlocutor is found wherever he may be, in another town, in the street, not only at home or at his office. The fax makes possible the very fast transmission of papers (letters, documents of all kind, announcements, information). Teleconferencing and video-conferencing are modern system that allows specialists from every part of the world participate in the same works, as if they were in the same room. E-mail is a fast and cheap post office for every one.
The new system of education has started using modern communication technology, and it's only the beginning. Computers in general are very useful and they have become a common tool in every school. The Internet provides access to the latest information in every field.
Modern communication technology brings great changes in the educational system. The long - distance learning, for instance, offers good opportunities for those people who, for one reason or another, couldn't go to a college to study.
There are, of course, bad effects as well. The Internet provides not only information, but an infinite range of very attractive games, together with the possibility of communication with unknown people all over the world on the Chat. Young people happen to spend hours every day in front of the computer, and not quite for learning. They don't read as much as the older generations, and they don't even write as much - by hand, I mean. They don't write letters, but messages on the Internet. Those addicted to the computers don't practise sports any more, or they do it seldom. Paradoxically, chatting on the Internet, which means communication with a great number of people from the whole world, may affect communication of the individual with those around him, family, friends, colleagues. The individual spends hours in an imaginary world, an unreal one.
But this is part of the progress and I suppose solutions will be found for everything which now seems a bad effect.
Do you agree that a country's national character is largely influenced by its climate and geografical position? Give reasons.
Well, to answer such a question, I think I should be
much more experienced than I am. I travelled too
little to have a personal opinion on this. I can only speak about what I have
read, and according to what I've read, yes, the climate and the geografical position have an influence on the national
character. Even on their phusycal appearance: those nation that are more exposed to the sun are darker in skin,
the Northern people, for instance, living in colder perts
of the globe, are blond, blue-eyed. The temperament of people is also affected,
influenced, the way they live, the way they dress, even the way they speak.
This seems to be true within the same country, for instance they say that
people living in colder parts of
The Latin nations are noisy, and communicative, and loving; people living in the Northern parts are cold in attitude, reserved in manners. Those living in areas dominated by a temperate, continental climate are generally well-balanced, serious and friendly. A pleasantly warm climate makes people very friendly, cheerful, passionate, fun loving. It seems that the climate of a country and its geografical position affect it more than we would like to admit.
Argue in favour or against the generally acknowledged fact that there is a gap between generations.
The psychological and social pressures acting upon the young, often hypersensitive persons, turn them into voctims of the adult world, but also into its severest critics.
Sometimes the teenagers, with their intransigent sense of justice, detects horrifying flaws in the adults society: hypocrisy, selfishness, indifference, snobbery, brutality and stupidity.
Some of them end adopting the conventions of the adults' world, other and rejecting them.
The teenagers often try to become involved with people, to build a bridge over the gap between generations. But many times their involvement with the adults often brings pain and disillusionment.
They are willing to speak about their problems and get the adults' help but in the same time they are afraid of the adults reaction. All these happen because most of the adults have another style of life , they are concerned with other problems and have no time for socializing with teenagers.
Moreover most of the adults don't trust teenagers and blame them for their behavior: teenagers don't value education, they waste money, criticize their parents or argue with them, they are rebels, they smoke, drink, use drugs and back self control.
In my opinion, it is unfair to make such a generalizations. Many teenagers are succsesful students, have strong friendships and good relationships with parents. They don't smoke, drink or take drugs, they don't even swear.
Most of the bad behaviors of the teenagers have their origin in the relationship between children and parents. Sometimes the parents lack the necessary moral strength to offer their children an example of proper behavior. Sometimes the adults underestimate the teenager.
In consequence of this treatment many of teenagers reject the moral code of the adults' world and end drinking heavily and using drugs.
Secondly, there are a lot of spas with mineral waters that are famous as curatives for illness.
Apart from the breathtaking landscapes the Romanians also take pride in being a country with very rich and rare fauna: the brown bear, the chamois, and the lynx are only some examples.
In
Unfortunately, the road system within the country is not the best possible and traveling by train may be an unpleasant experience. The services are not of the best quality, despite the high prices in the hotels. The owners of the most of the hotels invest little, but want to profit as much as possible. In this way services are rather bad, while prices are high. The consequences is that tourists choose other countries to enjoy their holidays. Thus the beauty of our country is inefficiently exploited. Tourism could produce much profit for the country, as it does in other countries. It could if some of the defficiencies, like those which I have remembered, were eliminate, but it doesn't.

Nowadays, you can quite often hear: Money can buy anything! Is the statement true? Can it really buy anything? Give reasons.
Money can buy anything is a statement we often hear today. But I think it is not true. It is only an illusion. You can buy only goods which have no value. They cannot make you really happy. If someone is happy only to have a big house or a good car I think he/she is a narrow-minded person.
What about with love, respect and knowledge which are the most precious treasures in a man's life?
You cannot buy neither love nor respect with money. I know many people who possess a large sum of money but they are not happy. Some of them are almost illiterate and the others laugh at them. Such an example is Gigi Becali who is not able to speak correctly.
I also know many people who have all they want but they haven't yet a real friend or someone to love them. The most important things in a man's life have nothing to do with money. For example I have no much money but I am very happy. I have somebody who loves me very much, I have my dreams and desires to fulfil, such as: the university, and a career in journalism.
For all these I need no much money. I need only to be healthy and have the power to work hard for being able, later, to rejoice at my achievements.
Name at least three major problems or dangers mankind is faced with nowadays. Think of possible causes and suggest effective measures or solutions.
The global warming and the thinning of the ozone layer are ones of the major dangers mankind is faced nowadays. These phenomenons are caused by pollution. I believe that we should be kinder to our planet and treat it with a little more respect and protect the environment. We should preserve the woods, fields, lakes and rivers which are in danger.
An another problem is nuclear power. This is a controversial issue. Although specialists try to make nuclear power safer, the long term effects of a nuclear acident would be tremendous. Those who consider it more ecological, forget something very important: before nuclear power becomes of real use to mankind, it can make a lot of victims. The price to be paid is so high that we should think if it is worth paying, because it is estimated in human lives.
Moreover a nuclear accident cannot be evaluated only in the number of lives lost at the moment of the accident; the aftermath is much more serious: long term effects more than double the number of victims.
After all, the effort to preserve other natural
resources, to diminish pollution by using nuclear power could be destroyed in a
few moments by
an unexpected and inexplicable accident. An example such as
Discuss the importance of family and home environment in the formation of character. You may refer to yourself as an example:
Education and the formation of character is a long, complex, and sometimes delicate process of teaching, training and shaping teenagers into educated people.
This is a topic that is often discussed in today's world. People consider it to be of great significance.
The relation between forming a character by the family and freedom is challenging and delicate.
The limits between teaching children to think and act freely and leaving them alone, unprotected, are tricky. I think it is the responsibility of parents to prvide the rules for the right attitude on behalf of the children. The family know to guide them in such a way that they can manage on their own even better than the school.
Parents should intervene, gently but steadily.
To my mind there is no perfect way to make children do what they should do, by force. Education of a character is a pains-taking effort about learning to be free and choose.
I think that family and home environment hold an outstanding place in the delicate process of forming the character.
It is a matter of trust and setting examples and an adequate family-children relationship.I do believe that a real partnership can help all of us shape our personality to become the educated men and women the system seeks to produce.
Narrate the plot of a love story famous in the world literature or history. Give reasons for your choice.
I have chosen to narrate Romeo and Juliet because their story of love is so tragic. The final catastrophe is not caused by the nature and the actions of the central characters, but by the inimical fate.
Their unlucky stars make the characters be in wrong place at the wrong time.
The decisive events in the play occur with
instantaneous suddenness: the heroes meet on Sunday at the feast in the Capulet's
ballroom, fall in love at first sight, and are united in marriage by Friar
Laurence the very next day. No sooner do they draw apart than Romeo finds
himself involved with the alien public world and its imperatives - he kills Tybalt, Juliet's cousin after trying to settle a quarrel
between him and Mercutio. Romeo is banished from
Meanwhile, Balthasar brings Romeo the false report of Juliet's death, while the Friar's messenger does not reach the young lover.
Romeo leaves for
Understanding the tragic mistake, Juliet kills herself. The connection of love with death, in this play, suggests the intense passion, which becomes self-destructive.
A century ago the idea of man walking on the Moon was considered unthinkable. Now people have started to buy lots on the Moon and one day we may hear about people living there. Comment upon these ideas.
A century ago we barely could think such a thing like walking on the Moon.
The Moon is a natural sattelite of the Earth and it represented and still represents a mystery for most of us. It was thw dearest dream of the scientists to dicover what happens there and how the atmosphere is on it. So that they work hard to reach the Moon. The great scientific and technological achievements of the 20th century made such a dream be possible. The first people who made the first step on the Moon were the Americans. In 1969, a crew of astronauts reached for the first time it.
Their achievements permit us to dream of Moon a land where in the future, people could live. Walking on the Moon is still a controversial issue.
Yet, a group of scientists tried to demonstrate that
the famous travel on the Moon from was a fake.
Last week I watched a documentary on Discovery channel. The scientists tried to
demonstrate, by analyzing the pictures, that all of these were made on earth.
The images, they said, were directed and filmed on the earth, on the famous
land of 52 area, in
I don't know if they are right or not. All I could say about this is that I won't be surprised if one day I hear that people buy lots on the Moon or they even live there.
Although I am very young I have already learn that today almost everuthing is possible.
9. There are moments in our life when we can only dream and hope for a better life, a better world. Each man has a dream, a wish and for it he/she work hard and sometimes even live for it.
I know people who lost all they have (a dear person, all their money, their houses) but they went on dreaming and wishing they overcome the misfortunes and one day everything will be better for them.
If we didn't dream our life would become unbearable because sometimes our hopes are the only things that make us live.
My dream............................
I think that everyone must do as I did and the whole world would become a better place to live in.
11. I don't know what I could do for our country to become a better place to live in, but definetly I know what I should do for our town. First of all I would repair the highways in my town.
I would try to manage the funds of the town as well as I could for a better life.
