This document provides technical information on the available BSS performance counters provided by the Performance Management application of the Alcatel EVOLIUMTM BSS in Release B6.
For more explanation on the Performance Management application please refer to the BSS Feature Description .
GPRS counters are provided in a separate document , because GPRS is an optional feature.
The following chapters describe the available Performance Management Information provided by the Alcatel GSM 900/GSM 1800/GSM 1900 BSS.
The chapter "BSS Counters" describes the performance measurements performed in the BSC, providing counters grouped in measurement types. Within the measurement types the counters are sorted according to the counter name in alphabetical order. The Appendix provides the counters sorted by their ID within a measurement type.
The chapter "Observation Measurements Observation Measurements" describes
the performance observations performed in the BSC, providing records of system
events grouped in observation types. Within the observation measurement types
the counters are sorted according to the counter
ID.
The descriptions in chapters and provides per counter, indicator or record:
Counter Name: the counter/indicator/record name as provided at the OMC-R to the user. The counter name is defined in a manner that allows to deduce the provided counter purpose from the name. A counter name is unique within the measurement type.
Counter ID:
provides the unique short name identification of the counter/indicator/record.
It is used for easier counters handling of the countersas
possible by counter names.
Domain: Handover 16116n133q , Quality of Service, Resource Availability & Usage, Traffic Load and Adjacency indicates on which measurement domain a counter supplies information. The domains are only relevant for the BSS counters.
Description: both,
the information supplied by the counter/indicator/record is
described and in which operational task the counter can help, is
described.
Measured Object indicates for which object the counter collects the performance data. Possible objects are:
- Cell: (common) cell,
- target or source cell
(handover counters)
- HO adj.: handover adjacency target or source cell
- TRX_TS: TRX-timeslot,
TRX TRX
(all timeslots)or
TRX-timeslot (resource usage
counters)
LapD: LapD-link,
N7
SL: N7-link (transmission
counters),
X.25: X.25 link,
- BSC: BSC (SMS counters).
Type: the counter collection mechanism (cumulative counters (CC), status inspection (SI), discrete event registration (DER)) is indicated. Three types of BSS counters can be distinguished according to the way their value is determined:
- Cumulative Counters (CC):
instances of pre-defined events
are accumulated in counters over time with
The results will be made
available at pre-defined reporting intervals.
- Status Inspection (SI):
groups of items can be periodically inspected to ascertain status (e.g. how many channels in a trunk are simultaneously busy?), with results made available at pre-defined reporting intervals. The sampling period is given in brackets.
- Discrete Event Registration (DER):
pre-defined event occurrences can be recorded in
detail tThe
sampling rate of discrete events being is an
operator controlled attribute.
G1/G2: this
filed indicates if the counter/indicator/record is supported by the G1 or G2
BSC. As G1 BSC is not supporting all BSS features in B6.2, not all counters are
supported by this BSC hardware generation.
BSS counters are either Cummulative or Status Inspection counters. They are grouped in Measurement Types, each dedicated to the data collection and the statistics for a particular system task. Each Measurement Type (and all included counters) can be activated in the frame of a measurement campaign for a set of network elements. The counters are implemented in the BSC.
This measurement type provides a set of counters related to the radio traffic evaluation per telecom procedure.
Measurement Type 1 can be used in On-Demand Measurement-Campaigns. It can be activated per cell.

Observation measurements provide reports on DescreteDiscrete
Event Registration counters. The observation measurements are dedicated to very
detailed system behaviour analysis. They create a very high load for the system
and thus can be activated only on a limited number of cells at the same time.
These counters are grouped in Measurement Types, each dedicated to particular system procedure. Each Observation Measurement Type can be activated in the frame of a on-demand measurement campaign for a set of network elements. The counters are implemented in the BSC.
This measurement type provides detailed observation reports on the behaviour of used SDCCH channels. An observation is composed of a set of records, each record being related to a single channel seizure within the observed cell.
Type 10 can be used in On-Demand Measurement-Campaigns. It can be activated on a limited number of cells.
