How to convert an AVI to DVD-R
To convert an AVI to DVD-R you need a few tools, the one-click programs do not give you any control at all and therefore the resulting files are not optimised so picture/sound quality may suffer as a result.
Firstly DivFix: Run DivFix and open your
AVI into it, then at the bottom and to the right there are some checkboxes,
choose "Keep original" and "Cut out the bad parts" then click on
"Rebuild Index". This program
repairs any bad sections of the AVI and removes the corrupt data, most 23123r171x of the
time this is not noticeable so just let DivFix do it's thing. Once it has finished you will find that you have
a newly created file with DivFix at the beginning,
THIS is the file you use to convert to DVD-R.
To run Gspot simply right click
your AVI file and choose open with, browse to Gspot
and select ok.
Inside this programs window there is loads of information
regarding your AVI file, for instance; What FPS is has and what sort of audio
stream it contains. All you need to know is what FPS it has and what sort of
Audio stream it contains (write these down!) FPS might be 25, 23.976 or 29.97
and audio might be either MP3 or AC3.
You now have a repaired AVI and also know the FPS and
audio.
Open VirtualDubMod.
Select file/open and open the new DivFix'd AVI into it, if you get an error ignore it ok. Now go to the Video menu and select "Direct stream copy" then move onto the stream menu and go to "stream list" this will open a new window with your audio stream in it at the top. If the audio stream is MP3 then just right click the audio stream and select "full processing". Now click the "Save WAV" button.
If you had an AC3 file then just click the "Demux" button and it will be saved as-is. One more thing we need to do to the AC3 before it can be processed with the AVI and that is covert it to WAV format using PX3's AC3 to WAV converter.
Open AC3 to WAV and load the AC3 file into it, then leave the destination if has already filled it in, if not just browse to your desktop and name the file similar to the original AC3. Click "Start Convert" and in not time at all it will convert to WAV!
You now have an audio stream and a DivFix'd AVI file.
Run TMPGEnc TMPGEnc Plus 2.5
From the wizard choose
the type of DVD you wish to create i.e. PAL =
25fps
or NTSC = 23.976 or
29.97fps then click "next".
Choose the DivFix'd AVI for video and your WAV for the audio and click "next".
The next screen involves a few more things you could do BUT all you need to do is select the top one, "Source range", from here you select "set start frame" and then to the left you need to click "move to end frame" and then "select end frame" then click "ok".
Click "next", then "next" (ignore any warnings by clicking yes) browse to the destination where you want to save the file. Click "ok" then "ok" then "ok" the movie will start to encode
Depending on the speed
of your computer this process is the longest of all the processes involved so
it may take from 1 and a half hours to 3 or 4 at least!
Once finished you will be left with an
m2v file and a newly created WAV file.
Open TMPGEnc Author
Click "source" and select the m2v file.
**Click "Chapter cut edit" if you want to add chapters - move to the frame where you want the chapter to start click "Add current frame to chapter" when finished click "ok"
Click "Create Menu" double click on "Title" to edit text or choose no menu.
Click "Output" choose the destination to save the files and click "Begin Output"
Within a few minutes the movie files are muxed and arranged in VOBs etc ready to be burned to DVD.
