HowTo: Installation of Spaix® in a local area network (LAN)

Summary

The installation in a local area network (LAN) brings some benefits in contrast to separate installations on many computers. If installed on a network server, all connected computers can use the program direct 18218i86s ly. This saves a lot of hard disk space and reduces the overhead for managing updates and configuration, it also can reduce the total installation time. On each computer only some system files may be updated and the entries in the start menu are created.

Description

Step 1: Install Spaix® on a network server

• Windows NT/2000: Log on using an Administrator account for this computer
• Insert the Spaix CD into the drive and launch the Spaix® setup program.
• Select drive and path on a network server. The target directory must be shared to all users as needed. The following rights for this directory and ist subdirectories must be granted to each user: Read files (read), Write to files (write), Create files (create) and Delete files (delete).
• In the "Setup Type" dialog click on the Button "Standard installation".

The files will now be copied to the selected shared target directory onto your network server. The start menu icons are also created on this computer

Step 2: Installation process on all other computers

• Windows NT/2000: Log on using an Administrator account for this computer
• Insert the Spaix CD into the drive and launch the Spaix® setup program.
• Select the same path on your network server as used in step 1
• In the "Setup Type" dialog click on the Button "Network installation".

Spaix Setup will only update some system files on the computer and create the start menu icons.

Troubleshooting

Setup errors while doing a "Network installation ":

Due to an error, some versions of Spaix Setup won't work properly when doing a network installation. You will receive one of the errors below during the setup process or when trying to launch Spaix first time:

• Setup: Setup for redistributable ActiveX failed
• Setup: Registy error: Unable to register the file xxx
• Launch: File VSRT32V3.DLL not found
• Launch: Undefined Dynalink into file VSRT32V3.DLL

In this cases please perform the following steps:

• Run Setup again and select "User defined installation" instead of "Network installation"
• De-select all items shown in the list
• Select only "Windows system files"
• Continue Setup as usual

Prerequisites for the installation

Spaix® needs at least Windows 95 or Windows NT 4 with SP 3 or an higher Version of Windows. Spaix will not run on Windows 3.x or Windows NT 3.x. For computers running Windows NT 4 you need at least the Windows NT 4 service pack 3. For computers running Windows 2000 the Windows 2000 service pack 1 is recommended.

In most cases it is necessary to update some components of your operating system. Spaix Setup checks the if the following components are installed, the will be updated automatically if an update is required:

To install any component manually, please launch the corresponding file from the Spaix CD, directory REDIST.

For the installation of the Microsoft® Data Access Components (ADO) you need administration rights on the computer, otherwise the installation will fail or not work properly. If the ADO Setup does restart your computer, please log on using the same user account again (admin rights), Setup will finish the installation after restarting Windows.
