software

    ERRORS.DOC                                              September 1996

JAR ERROR MESSAGES WITH BRIEF EXPLANATION:

    #100  Can't open file <filename> for reading

This error message usually occurs if JAR is trying to compress a

file which is locked by another application.

    #101  Can't create file <filename>

JAR can't create a file with the specified name. Filename may

        contain unsupported characters.

    #102  Unknown, no description available

JAR detected an error situation but a description is not

available 151p1516b .  This is an internal JAR error.

#104  Wrong program flow detected at (<module>,<line>)

Possibly conflict with used software or hardware

One of the internal JAR checks failed.  This may be an internal JAR

error or a conflict with installed software or hardware.

    #105  Internal at (<module>,<line>)

          Possibly conflict with hardware

Another type of internal JAR check failed.

    #107  EMS call failed

          Extended error code <code>

EMS memory manager returned error code.  Check that your memory

manager is installed properly and does not conflict with other

        software or hardware.

    #108  XMS call failed

          Extended error code <code>

XMS memory manager returned error code. Check that your memory

manager is installed properly and does not conflict with other

        software or hardware.

    #109  Internal table overflow

Near memory heap exhausted. You need to specify a simpler command

        or fewer arguments.

    #110  Not enough memory

Not enough conventional memory to run program.  The JAR DOS version

usually uses less memory if EMS memory is available.  Detailed

information about memory usage available in JAR.DOC.

    #111  DOS version 3.30 required

JAR requires DOS version 3.30 or higher.

    #112  Can't read file <filename>

        File read operation failed.

    #113  Can't write file <filename>

File write operation failed.  Usually this means that disk space is

        exhausted.

    #114  Can't seek file <filename>

        Seek operation on file failed.

#115  Unexpected end of file while reading <filename>

JAR expected that more data would be available. Possibly the

        archive is damaged.

#116  Requested command exhausted all virtual memory.

          Please specify simpler operation

JAR uses built-in virtual memory (VM) to process many files using a

limited amount of physical memory. On update operations JAR can use

up to 25Mbytes of virtual memory. Reported error means that all VM

is exhausted. You need to decrease the number of files to be

        processed.

    #117  Bad data to decompress

JAR engine detected data which cannot be decompressed. This means

that your archive is damaged. You can try the "-jr" and "-hx"

        options to extract files.

    #118  Can't read directory <path>

        Directory scan operation failed.

#119  Error while reading directory <path>

        Directory scanning can't be completed.

#120  Scanned filename <filename> can't be stored into archive

JAR scanned filename which contains unsupported binary characters.

Probably your directory or disk FAT is damaged.

#121  File <filename> size changed since scanning

JAR uses the scanned file size to choose the proper compression

method. So the file size should not change until after the file is

        compressed.

#122  Test with compressed file contents failed.

          Probably file was modified

The file comparison test with option "-ht1" failed. One possibility

is that the file has been modified since the time of compression.

Another possibility is faulty hardware or software.

    #123  CRC check failed

File failed CRC check. The archive is damaged. You can try the

"-jr" and "-hx" options to extract files.

#124  Path <filename> is too long to be processed

JAR supports paths up to about 380 characters length.

#125  Path within archive <path> is not valid

You specified an incorrect path to be stored within an archive.

Note that JAR does not support the storing of drive letters within

an archive. Use the "-ho" option instead.

#126  Can't store two files into same location <path>

JAR does not support the storing of two filenames with the same

path in an archive. Use the "-ho" or "-jf" options as a possible

        workaround.

#127  File <filename> is greater than 1G so can't be handled

The current JAR engine does not support compression of files larger

        than 1Gbyte.

#128  Unsupported header format. Probably it is damaged

JAR detected unsupported header format. Archive is damaged.

#129  Necessary program version <version> or higher

Newer compressor version required. Note that the JAR archive

records the necessary compressor version for three types of

        operations: update, extract and list.

    #134  Error reading standard input

        Read from standard input failed.

#135  Argument <argument> is too long

Command line or response file argument is too long.

    #136  Binary character parsed <character>

Command line or response file contains binary characters.

    #137  No trailing quote

        Incorrectly specified quoted argument.

#138  Response file is nested too deep

        Self-explanatory.

    #139  No command

        No command specified.

    #140  Unknown switch <switch>

Command line or response file contains incorrect switch.

    #141  Wrong parameter <switch argument>

        Self-explanatory.

    #142  Unknown command <command>

        Self-explanatory.

    #143  Option <option> can't be used with command <command>

Switch option is incompatible with command or reserved for future

        usage.

    #144  Archive <filename> not found

        Self-explanatory.

    #145  No archive specified

        Self-explanatory.

    #148  Can't close file <filename>

JAR failed to close file after reading or writing.

    #149  Can't delete directory <directory name>

JAR failed to delete directory. Probably it is not empty.

    #150  Can't delete file <filename>

JAR failed to delete file. Probably it is read-only. Use the "-ha"

        option to delete read-only files.

    #151  Can't update locked archive

Locked archive (created with "-jl" option) can't be updated.

#152  Configuration file contains incorrect additional

          options for command <command>

Incorrect switch parsed from CFG file.

    #153  Can't update locked CHAPTER <no>

        Self-explanatory.

    #154  Chapter limit reached

JAR supports up to about 16,000,000 chapters.

#155  Chapter <no> is out of range

Archive does not contain specified chapter.

    #156  Can't rename file <old filename>

          to <new filename>

        File rename operation failed.

#157  Volume limit (max 990) exceeded

        Self-explanatory.

    #158  Archive became too large

Currently JAR does not support archives larger than 1.5Gbytes.

    #159  Archive header damaged

JAR detected a damaged archive header. Try the "-hx" option or in

the worse case the "rh" command for repairing the archive.

#160  Last volume required (default extension *.j)

Volume (<no>) has been specified instead

Unlike ARJ, JAR processes a volume archive starting with the last

        volume.

#161  File <filename> is not archive

        Self-explanatory.

    #162  Can't work with multi-volume archive

Command cannot work with a multi-volume archive. One possibility is

to concatenate it back into a single volume (using "y" command)

        before running the specified command.

#163  Source and destination archive must differ

When updating a multi-volume archive using the "y" command, the

destination archive name must differ from the source name.

#164  Copy command may update multi-volume archive

          only if -o option specified

        Self-explanatory.

    #165  Failed to load <path>

        JAR overlay or DLL missed.

#166  Cipher returned error code <code>

          Probably archive is damaged

JAR archive protection algorithm detected a damaged archive.

    #167  Method <method> not available (current is <current method>)

Incorrect method specified in "-hg" option.

    #168  Incorrect password

Self-explanatory. Be sure you entered password in the correct

        case.

    #169  Passwords did not match

        Self-explanatory.

#170  Password is too short (at least <nbr> characters)

Short and trivial passwords allow brute-force attacks against

protected archives.  We recommend the use of passwords longer than

16 characters.  Special characters and digits in password are also

        recommended.

#171  Password must not contain character <char code>

Passwords must not contain binary or international characters.

#172  Password is too long (max <no> characters)

        Self-explanatory.

#173  Password can't be changed. Archive uses unsupported

compression method. Newer archiver version required.

        Self-explanatory.

#174  Archive requires password ("-g" option)

Attempt to access protected archive without password.

#175  No recoverable data or incorrect archive password

The "rh" command cannot locate any repairable data. Probably

incorrect archive password or protection method has been specified.

#176  Error during file copy operation

        File copy failed.

    #178  Executable fails CRC check

JAR executable has been modified. One possibility is a virus

        attack.

    #179  Can't get file <filename> date/time

Cannot obtain file date/time when using "-u" and "-f" options.

#180  Failed to execute command interpreter

        Self-explanatory.

#181  Too many arguments for command

There are extra arguments for command.

#182  Command does not support -x option

        Self-explanatory.

    #183  Invalid date string: <date>

        Invalid parameter for "-hm" option

    #184  Can't modify file <filename>

        Can't open file for modification.

    #185  Can't locate JAR32.EXE

It must be in the same directory as JAR.EXE

        This note for "reg" command.

#186  File does not contain registration key

Specified file for "reg" command does not contain JAR

        registration key.

    #187  Invalid registration key

Specified file for "reg" command contains invalid JAR

        registration key.

    #188  Program already registered

You cannot register an already registered program.

    #189  Registered program version required

"-hy" option requires registered program version.

#190  Cannot select protection method for an already protected archive

You must first unprotect archive and then change protection method.

  JAR WARNING MESSAGES WITH EXPLANATION:

    #300  No files scanned

No files to add to archive.

    #301  Configuration file not found.

          Use

          JAR CFG <file name>

command to extract default configuration file

JAR configuration file must reside in the same directory as the JAR

executables unless the environment variable JAR_CFG_FILE specifies

        another filename.

    #302  Bad configuration file <filename>

        Self-explanatory.

#303  Archive does not require password

Command line contains password for not protected archive.

#305  "-m4" compression method is not recommended for

archives that may be modified in future.

          Please read documentation for details.

        Self-explanatory.

#306  Failed to execute command interpreter

        Self-explanatory.

#307  Wildcards do not match any files:

Lists wildcards which do not match files (directories ignored).

Warning available with "-hl" option only.

  OTHER JAR MESSAGES WITH EXPLANATION:

    <filename> is not requested volume

Supplied file is not an archive

    Break signaled!

The user pressed Control C or Control BREAK.

    Can't make directory <directoryname>

JAR cannot create directory. Probably a file with same name exists.

    Can't open <filename>

JAR cannot open the file <filename>. The file may be set to

readonly or it may already be in use.

Copying failed. Temporary archive <filename> left

This error usually means that there is not enough disk space to

copy the intermediate archive file to its destination drive. JAR

does not purge the intermediate archive file in this situation so

that the file can be copied manually to a drive with enough disk

        space.

Damaged archive data encountered. Trying to skip damaged file(s)

With the "-jr" option JAR32 does not abort on a damaged archive

and tries to continue extraction of remaining files.

    Extracted file <filename> is damaged

With the "-jr" option JAR32 extracted file but it failed the CRC32

        test.
