REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

WORD GALLERY will run on most IBM or compatible computers with color graphics

capability, at least 400 KB of free RAM after DOS and any TSR programs are

installed, PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.1 or greater and one disk drive. A hard disk and

mouse are optional. WORD GALLERY supports the COVOX SPEECH THING and the SOUND

BLASTER sound output devices, however, these devices are not required.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to WORD GALLERY, an educational program for children of age 3 and up.

Even adults who are studying a second language could make use of WORD GALLERY as

a learning tool. Very young children can use this program for object

recognition games with their parents' help.

Many hours were spent in the development of WORD GALLERY and your support would

be greatly appreciated. Supporting the Shareware concept helps to keep the cost

of software down and also allows the developers to continue enhancing the

product. Remember that Kinderware, Inc. will gladly accept any comments you may

have regarding the WORD GALLERY program. We are very interested in making the

program even more valuable as a teaching aid. We hope this program helps your

child have fun and learn to read and spell at the same time.

WORD GALLERY is an educational program designed to help children associate the

printed word with the object it describes. It provides a set of colorful

word/object flashcards. These flashcards are used to play a variety of games.

Children will enjoy watching the screen fill with color as they use WORD

GALLERY.

WORD GALLERY looks best on VGA or EGA equipped systems. It will also run on

systems with MCGA, TGA and CGA displays. Use of a mouse input device is

optional.

4

Version 3.0 consists of five separate "GAMES". Individual games are

"color-coded" so children can easily select the one they want. The options can

be changed directly from each game. An included utility program allows you to

set the options to initial values and also to select which words you want WORD

GALLERY to use. The VGA/EGA version of the pictures are colored from a very

large set of dithered screen colors. The commercial version 3.0 now includes

over 300 words/pictures!

GETTING STARTED

Before attempting to use the WORD GALLERY program, please make a backup copy of

the WORD GALLERY diskette(s). Consult your DOS manual for instructions on

performing this procedure. The disk(s) that WORD GALLERY is being run from must

not be write protected because the program will write configuration data to the

disk.

If your system includes a mouse input device, then the mouse driver must be

installed before the WORD GALLERY program is run. Consult your mouse user's

guide for instructions on loading the mouse driver.

Before running WORD GALLERY itself, you should run the setup program (WGSETUP)

to be sure that the proper sound device is selected. If your selection of sound

device is the PC's internal speaker then the digitized sound will only be

available if you have a turbo XT or faster. A 4.77 MHz 8088 processor is not

fast enough to play the sound through the PC speaker, it is fast enough however

to play the sound through the Covox Speech Thing or the Sound Blaster. If your

system is not fast enough WORD GALLERY will not allow the voice option to be

enabled. You can enable it in WGSETUP but WORD GALLERY will turn it back off.

If WORD GALLERY disables the voice option but you think that your system is fast

enough, or you just want to hear what it sounds like if the computer is too

slow, then put the following switch on the command line: /V+. If you don't like

the digitized voice and want to keep the kids from turning it on, then put the

following switch on the command line: /V-.

If you have selected the Covox Speech Thing as the sound device, then WORD

GALLERY can play four note polyphonic music. To enable WORD GALLERY to play

polyphonic music, you must load the POLYNOTE software that was supplied with the

Covox Speech Thing. The POLYNOTE software is a small terminate and stay

resident (TSR) program. It must be loaded before WORD GALLERY is started.

Refer to your Covox Speech Thing documentation for details on loading POLYNOTE.

At this time WORD GALLERY only contains digitized speech for the English

language. Plans are for future versions to contain digitized speech for the

other languages. No guarantee is made as to the availability of the foreign

language digitized speech at this time.

WORD GALLERY will operate in one of four graphics modes depending upon your

system's display adapter:

1. 640 X 350 16 colors VGA or EGA adapter.

2. 320 X 200 256 colors MCGA adapter.

3. 320 X 200 16 colors TGA adapter.

4. 320 X 200 4 colors CGA adapter.

The proper mode is automatically selected. The program attempts to enter the

modes in the order given above. If a mode cannot be entered then the next mode

in the list is tried. If the program does not detect your particular display

5

adapter properly, you can use the following parameters on the command line:

/WGM will eliminate the attempt to enter mode 1; /WGT will eliminate the attempt

to enter both mode 1 and mode 2; /WGC will force the program into mode 4 (CGA).

EXAMPLE - To force the use of mode 3 (CGA), enter the following at the DOS

prompt: "WG /WGC" (do not type the quote characters).

If your system contains an EGA adapter with only 64K of video memory, then mode

1 may not be used. In this case mode 3 should be used. You may need to use the

/WGT parameter to force this mode selection.

The default WORD GALLERY mouse cursor is an animated bee. The bee appears to

flap its wings, even when sitting still. If you have your mouse driver

installed when WORD GALLERY is started, then you will get the bee mouse cursor.

If you do not like the animation of the mouse cursor, you can turn it off by

using the command line switch /A-. If you would rather use the normal arrow

style cursor, then use the command line switch /B-.

WORD GALLERY uses a random clearing effect when picture areas on the screen must

be erased. This effect will be automatically turned on if your computer is

faster than a 4.77 MHz PC. If you do not like the effect or the slight delay it

causes, then you can turn it off with the command line switch /E-. If you have

a slow computer but would like to use the effect anyway, then you can turn it on

with the command line switch /E+.

In order to run the WORD GALLERY program the picture and support files must be

in the current directory so they can be used by the program. The necessary files

are described below. If 5.25" 360K diskettes are being used, then two will be

necessary. Arrange the files on the two diskettes as shown below. All other

types of diskettes will hold the entire set of files. If the program is being

installed on a hard disk, then simply copy all files to a single directory.

WORD GALLERY PROGRAM DISKETTE

WG.EXE The WORD GALLERY program.

*.GXL Font and image libraries.

WGMUSIC.* Music definition files.

WGOPTION.DAT The options data.

WG.DOC This document.

WGQUICK.REF Quick reference guide.

WGORDER.FRM An order form.

WORD GALLERY WORD SET DISKETTE

WGSETUP.EXE The Setup Utility program.

WGWORDSA.000 Word set file.

The SHAREWARE version of the program has a word set file that contains 50

words/pictures. If you register, you will receive the commercial version which

has over 300 words/pictures. Use the WGSETUP program if you want to see the

list of available words.

WGSETUP

The file WGSETUP.EXE is the WORD GALLERY setup utility. This program allows you

to set all the WORD GALLERY options and also to select which words/pictures you

want WORD GALLERY to use.

6

NOTE: You should run this program first to be sure that the sound device is

properly selected.

Most of the options may be changed from the WORD GALLERY program directly. The

options that may be changed only by WGSETUP are indicated as such in their

descriptions. The selected options are saved in the file WGOPTION.DAT. This

file is updated whenever the options are changed by WGSETUP or by WORD GALLERY

itself.

Selecting which words/pictures you want WORD GALLERY to use may only be done

with the WGSETUP program.

Run the WGSETUP program by typing: [path specification\]WGSETUP. The brackets

([]) indicate that the path specification is optional and should be used if

WGSETUP.EXE does not reside in the current default directory. Do not type the

bracket characters when entering the command to run WGSETUP. The path

specification may select a different disk drive if necessary.

When the WGSETUP program is run, the main menu will appear.

MODIFYING THE OPTIONS

To modify the options press the "A" key on the keyboard when the main menu is

displayed. The option modifications screen will then appear.

Pressing the key which corresponds to the letter shown to the left of the option

description will change the state of that option. For example, to change the

state of the "LETTERCASE" option, press the "A" key on the keyboard. The

effects of changing each option are described below.

Lettercase

----------

This option affects all games. It has two possible settings:

UPPER - All words will be displayed in upper case letters.

LOWER - All words will be displayed in lower case letters.

Words/page (flashcard game)

----- ----- -----------------

This option affects only the flashcard game. It allows you to select the number

of words/pictures that will be displayed on each page during the flashcard game.

The choices range from one to six.

Words/page (matching game)

----- ----- ----------------

This option affects only the matching game. It allows you to select the number

of words/pictures that will be displayed as possible matches during the matching

game. The choices range from two to five.

Flashcard Mode

----- ----- ----

This option affects only the flashcard game. It has two possible settings:

PICTURE FIRST - This setting will cause the picture "side" of the flashcard to

be shown first.

WORD FIRST - This setting will cause the word "side" of the flashcard to be

shown first.

7

Matching Mode

-------------

This option affects only the matching game. It has two possible settings:

PICTURE TO WORD - This setting will cause the program to display a picture and

ask the child to select the word that "matches".

WORD TO PICTURE - This setting will cause the program to display a word and ask

the child to select the picture that "matches".

Scoring

-------

This option affects all games except the flashcard game. This option has two

possible settings:

BEGINNER - The program will give the user a "STAR" for each answer regardless of

whether or not a hint was given. In addition, two wrong answers are

allowed before a hint is supplied.

EXPERT - The program will give the user a "STAR" only for correct answers. A

hint is given after the first incorrect response.

Hints

-----

This option is only valid for the guessing game. This option has two possible

settings:

ON - As each new word is presented to the child, the program will display the

word's picture. Also, the child will be able to obtain voice hints.

OFF - As each new word is presented to the child, the program will not display

the word's picture. Voice hints will also be disabled.

Language

--------

This option allows you to select the language in which you would like the word's

text to be displayed. The current choices are:

ENGLISH - GERMAN - SPANISH - FRENCH - DUTCH - ITALIAN

Remember that the digitized sound is only in English.

Use definite article

----- ----- ----------

This option allows you to select whether or not the definite article is

displayed with the word for all languages except ENGLISH. This option may only

be changed by WGSETUP. This option has two possible settings:

ON - Use the definite article when displaying the word's text. Note that the

Missing Letter, Spelling and Word Guess games do not require the article

to be entered, but display it along with the word when the correct answer

has been entered.

OFF - Do not display the definite article.

Use the German á character or ss

----- ----- --------- ----- --------

This option allows you to select whether the program should use the special

German character á or to substitute ss for it. This option may only be

changed by WGSETUP. This option has two possible settings:

á - Use the special character.

ss - Substitute ss for the special character.

Color picture when loaded

----- ----- ---------------

This option allows you to select whether or not the pictures should be

colored as soon as they are loaded. Previous versions of WORD GALLERY only

colored the picture after the correct answer was entered. This was used as

8

a reward. Now you can choose not to use the "coloring of the picture" as a

reward and have the program color the pictures when loaded. This option

may only be changed by WGSETUP. This option has two possible settings:

YES - Color the pictures as soon as they are loaded.

NO - Use the coloring of the pictures as a reward when the correct answer

is entered.

Tones

-----

This option has two possible settings:

ON - The tones that signify that an erroneous key has been pressed, or those

indicating a correct or incorrect response will be enabled.

OFF - All tones will be disabled.

Music

-----

This option has two possible settings:

ON - The music that plays after ten responses have been entered will be

enabled. NOTE: The music will play in the flashcard game when all the

words/pictures have been selected on the page.

OFF - All music will be disabled.

Voice

-----

This option has two possible settings:

ON - Playback of digitized speech will be enabled.

OFF - Playback of digitized speech will be disabled.

Sound device

------------

This option allows you to specify your sound output device. This option

may only be changed by WGSETUP. There are

three possible choices:

INTERNAL PC SPEAKER - Use the PC's speaker for sound output. All tones,

music and digitized voice will play through the PC

speaker.

COVOX SPEECH THING - Use the Covox Speech Thing for sound output.

Digitized voice will play through the Speech Thing.

Tones will play through the PC speaker. If you run

the Covox POLYNOTE driver before starting up WORD

GALLERY, then four note polyphonic music will play

through the Speech Thing. This software driver comes

with the Speech Thing and is a small terminate and

stay resident program. Refer to your Speech Thing

manual for information on running the driver. If you

do not run POLYNOTE before starting up WORD GALLERY, then

the music will play through the PC speaker.

SOUND BLASTER - Use the Sound Blaster for sound output. All tones

and music will play through the PC speaker.

Digitized voice will play through the Sound Blaster.

Allow option modification

----- ----- ---------------

The setting of this option determines whether or not the other options may be

modified from the WORD GALLERY program. This allows you to keep the child from

changing the options you have selected. This option has two possible settings:

YES - The WORD GALLERY program will allow the user to change the options.

NO - The WORD GALLERY program will not allow the user to change the options.

9

Exit to main menu

----- ----- -------

This selection will save the options you have selected in the file WGOPTION.DAT

and then return to the WGSETUP main menu.

SELECTING THE ACTIVE WORDS

To select which words/pictures you would like WORD GALLERY to use press the "B"

key on the keyboard when the main menu is displayed. The word selection screen

will then appear.

The list of words will appear on the left portion of the screen, and special

selection key descriptions will be shown on the right. Only twenty words will

be shown at a time. Each word will be displayed in one of two colors. If the

word is highlighted (bright green), then it will be used by WORD GALLERY. If

the word is not highlighted (white), then it will not be used by WORD GALLERY.

You may change the state of a word by pressing the key which corresponds to the

letter shown to the left of the word. If the word is highlighted, then pressing

the key will change its state to inactive and remove the highlighting (change it

to white). If the word is not highlighted, then pressing the key will change

its state to active and highlight it (change it to bright green).

You may change the portion of the word list that you are viewing by pressing the

PgDn and PgUp keys. An error beep will be heard if you attempt to move beyond

either end of the list.

The [Insert] key may be used to make all words in the list active. NOTE: This

will make all words active, not just the ones that are currently on the screen.

The [Delete] key may be used to make all words in the list inactive. NOTE: This

will make all words inactive, not just the ones that are currently on the

screen.

If you do not want to save the changes you have made to the word list, then you

may press the [Esc] key. This key will return the program to the main menu

without saving any changes.

When you have completed your changes, then press the [Enter] key. This key will

save the changes and then return the program to the main menu.

NOTE: There must be at least ten active words for WORD GALLERY to

operate. So be sure to leave at least ten words highlighted.

The active word information is stored directly in the WGWORDS*.* files.

EXITING WGSETUP

To exit the WGSETUP program press the "C" key on the keyboard when the main menu

is displayed. This will cause the WGSETUP program to terminate and return you

to the DOS prompt.

10

THE WORD GALLERY PROGRAM

To run the program, set the current directory to the directory in which the

files are located. Type "WG" (do not type the quote characters), and press the

ENTER key. After the program is loaded, a title page will appear. When you are

ready to begin the program, press any key.

MAIN MENU

The main menu will be displayed when the title page is cleared or when the user

selects the MENU command target while playing any of the games. This menu

allows the user to select the desired game and also to end the program.

Selections may be made with the keyboard or with a mouse. Each game has a

command target on which is printed the name of the game and the key which must

be pressed to select it. If a mouse is used, then simply point to the command

target and press any mouse button.

The details of each GAME will be described later. The meaning of the command

targets are described below:

KEY DESCRIPTION

--- -------- ----- ------ ----

F1 Selects the flashcard game.

F2 Selects the matching game.

F3 Selects the missing letters game.

F4 Selects the spelling game.

F5 Selects the word guess game.

ESC Exits the program and returns to DOS.

THE WORD GALLERY GAMES

General Information

This section will describe WORD GALLERY features that are common to most or all

of the games. A detailed description of each game will follow this section.

In the rest of this manual, the phrase "click the ... command target with the

mouse" will be used. This phrase means: Point to the command target with the

mouse cursor and press and release any of the mouse buttons.

In all games, the top portion of the display is divided into two areas. The

left side contains from one to three command targets. The right side contains

the score display.

The descriptions of the games below assume that the picture is not colored when

first loaded. If you set the color when loaded option to YES, then keep that in

mind when reading about the games.

THE STOP COMMAND TARGET

This command target has the text "ESC" and a STOP sign on it. Pressing the ESC

key or clicking the STOP command target with the mouse will return the program

to the main menu where a new game may be selected or the program may be exited.

See the description of the main menu above.

11

THE OPTIONS COMMAND TARGET

This command target may or may not be present. If you have used the WGSETUP

program and have set the Allow option modification option to "NO", then you will

not be allowed to modify the options from the WORD GALLERY program. If option

modification is not allowed, then this command target will not appear on the

screen. Otherwise the command target will appear and have the text character

"?" and a small picture similar to the option selection page on it. If this

command target is valid then pressing the "?" key or clicking the OPTIONS

command target with the mouse will cause the option selection page to appear.

The option selection page will fill the entire screen. The option selection

page will allow you to change all options that are applicable to the current

game. Refer to the section about the WGSETUP program to find out the details of

the various options and which games they affect. The selections may be made

with the mouse by pointing at the desired setting for a particular option and

clicking any mouse button. The selections may be made with the keyboard by

pressing the key that corresponds to the desired setting. When you are finished

selecting the desired options, press the "ESC" (Done) key or click the mouse on

the "Done" command target.

THE SAY COMMAND TARGET

This command target may or may not be present. If you have enabled voice

output, then the command target will appear and have the text character "=" and

a picture of a girl speaking on it. If this command target is valid then

pressing the "=" key or clicking the SAY command target with the mouse will

cause the current word to be "said" by the computer.

THE SCORE DISPLAY

The top right portion of the display is used for the score display in all games

except the flashcard game. This area will simply contain the word "FLASHCARD"

when playing the flashcard game. In all other games, the top center portion of

the display will be divided into ten rectangular areas. When a correct response

is entered an animated star will appear in one of the empty rectangular areas.

If an incorrect response is given and the scoring level is set to EXPERT, then a

star will not be put in the corresponding area. Instead it will be left blank.

If the scoring level is BEGINNER, then a star will always be put in the

corresponding area. When ten answers have been given then a song will play (if

the music option has been turned on). After the song finishes, the stars will

be erased and ten more responses must be given before another song will play.

NOTE: When playing the flashcard game, a song will play when all words/pictures

on a page have been selected and colored.

12

GAME #1 - FLASHCARD

This game can be played in two ways depending on the setting of the Flashcard

mode option.

1. If the Flashcard mode option is set to WORD FIRST, then the computer will

display the words. When the child selects the word, its picture will be

shown and colored.

2. If the Flashcard mode option is set to PICTURE FIRST then the computer will

display the pictures. When the child selects the picture, it will be colored

and its word will be displayed.

The number of words/pictures that are displayed on each page is determined by

the Words/page option. Once the words/pictures have been displayed, the program

will then wait for a word/picture to be selected or for the STOP or OPTIONS

command targets to be selected. To select a word/picture, the user must press

any mouse button while pointing to the word/picture or press the number key

which is printed on the bottom of the word/picture. When the word/picture is

selected, the program will first display the picture if the word was selected

(if the picture was selected then this step is not necessary). The picture will

then be colored and its word placed at the bottom of the picture. If the voice

option is enabled then the computer will speak the word. When all

words/pictures have been selected and colored, the program will play a song (if

the music option is turned on). When the song finishes, the next page of

words/pictures will be displayed and the sequence continues.

GAME #2 - MATCHING

This game can be played in two ways depending upon the setting of the matching

mode option.

1. If the matching mode option is set to "WORD TO PICTURE", then the computer

will display a word inside a box just below the score display. A group of

pictures will also be displayed. The number of pictures that are displayed

is determined by the words/page option. Once the pictures have been

displayed, the program will then wait for a picture to be selected or for the

STOP, OPTIONS or SAY command targets to be selected. If the picture that

matches the word is selected, the picture will be colored and its word placed

beneath it. If the voice option is enabled then the computer will speak the

word. To select a picture, the user must press any mouse button while

pointing to the picture or press the number key which is printed on the

bottom of the picture.

2. If the matching mode option is set to "PICTURE TO WORD", then the computer

will display a picture just below the score display. A group of words will

also be displayed. The number of words that are displayed is determined by

the words/page option. Once the words have been displayed, the program will

then wait for a word to be selected or for the STOP, OPTIONS or SAY command

targets to be selected. If the word that matches the picture is selected,

the picture will be moved to the location of the selected word, colored and

its word placed beneath it. If the voice option is enabled then the computer

will speak the word. To select a word, the user must press any mouse button

while pointing to the word or press the number key which is printed at the

bottom of the box containing the word.

13

Refer to the description of the SCORING option in the section about the

WGSETUP program and the description of the SCORE DISPLAY in the General

Information section for details about the way the program keeps score and gives

hints.

GAMES #3 - #5 General information

-------- ----- ------ -

When any of these games are started, a group of command targets will be

displayed at the bottom of the screen. Each command target will have a letter

written on it. Letters may be entered with the keyboard or by clicking on the

letter's command target with the mouse. Command targets that contain special

foreign characters will have the keyboard entry for them in the upper left

corner of their command target. If an incorrect letter is entered then

that letter's command target will change to have a red background.

Missing letters in the words will be replaced with the underscore character.

The letter which must be entered in games #4 and #5 will have its corresponding

underscore flashing.

GAME #3 - MISSING LETTERS

A picture will be displayed and its word will be placed beneath it. The word

will have one letter missing. The program will then wait for a letter to be

entered or for the STOP, OPTIONS or SAY command targets to be selected. When

the correct letter is entered, the picture will be colored and the complete word

placed beneath it. If the voice option is enabled then the computer will speak

the word.

GAME #4 - SPELLING

A picture will be displayed and its word will be placed beneath it. The word

will have all of its letters replaced with underscore characters. The program

will then wait for a letter to be entered or for the STOP, OPTIONS or SAY

command targets to be selected. The letters must be entered in the proper order

to spell the complete word. As each correct letter is entered, its underscore

will be replaced with the letter. When the complete word has been entered, the

picture will be colored and the complete word placed beneath it. If the voice

option is enabled then the computer will speak the word.

GAME #5 - WORD GUESS

If the Hints option is set to ON then a picture will be displayed. If the Hints

option is set to OFF then a blank white box will be located in the place of the

picture. The word will be placed beneath the picture and will have all of its

letters replaced with underscore characters. Seven small boxes will be

displayed to the right of the picture. These boxes will be used to display the

wrong guesses. The program will then wait for a letter to be entered or for the

STOP, OPTIONS or SAY command targets to be selected. The letters may be entered

in any order. If the word contains two or more of the same letter, that letter

must only be entered once. If an incorrect guess is made, then that letter's

command target will be removed and the letter will be placed into one of the

wrong guess boxes. After seven wrong guesses have been entered, a hint will be

given. The hint will show all remaining letters.

EGA COLORING BOOK

We would like to make you aware of another children's educational program

developed here at Kinderware. This program is also distributed as Shareware.

EGA Coloring Book (ECB) is a computer coloring book. It allows children to use

over 500 colors and patterns to color full screen pictures. Children, age 3 and

up, will enjoy bringing the pictures to life with color. ECB teaches eye-hand

coordination and encourages artistic expression. ECB is very easy to use. We

have been told by registered users that ECB is one of the few programs that

their 3 year old children can actually use alone. Registered users also report

that the only problem their kids have is getting the parents and grandparents to

stop using ECB. Version 2.0 is very easy for children to use since most of the

common commands have picture icons which can be easily identified. Even the

desired picture is selected from small versions of the full screen pictures.

ECB is a great program to use to introduce the computer to children. They will

have so much fun, they won't even realize that they are learning basic computer

skills.

ECB runs in the EGA high resolution (640x350 16 color, so an EGA or VGA display

is required) mode to provide beautifully detailed pictures and hundreds of vivid

colors (produced by mixing the 16 screen colors). Pictures can be printed on

most popular black and white and COLOR printers. You can use your own PCX files

for pictures. Up to five different "kids" will have their colored pictures

saved automatically for later viewing or continued coloring. You can even save

your colored picture as a PCX file for use with other programs. The registered

version comes with 20 full screen pictures. Four additional picture packages

(coloring books) may be ordered which contain 50 more pictures: The Kids At

Play coloring book (10 pictures), the Alphabet coloring book (20 pictures), the

Vehicles On The Move coloring book (10 pictures) and the Christmas Scenes

coloring book (10 pictures).

We are confident that EGA Coloring Book will provide many happy hours of

entertainment for the entire family.

See the order form for pricing information. Note that you will receive a

discount on EGA Coloring Book if you buy both programs at the same time. Also,

you can purchase a Shareware version of EGA Coloring Book for a nominal fee with

your Word Gallery order. If your order form file is missing, contact

Kinderware, Inc. for pricing information.
