INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS NAVIGATOR
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
I. WELCOME
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
Before embarking, we wish to welcome you to the Windows Navigator
("WinNav"), and thank both our registered users and new users for
trying our Microsoft Windows application.
1.1. INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS NAVIGATOR
WinNav is a Microsoft Windows application designed to allow users
to navigate and explore all of the files, directories and infor-
mation contained on their system drives and hard disks, and to
manage same with both Windows and standard DOS applications
without leaving the Windows environment.
It features many new and unusual features that can be customized
by each user to suit his or her own application programs and data
files; these features in some ways extend well beyond those of
Windows' Program Manager, File Manager and MS-DOS Executives, or
any other Windows application to date. WinNav offers an intelli-
gent, customizable interface that allows users to optimize Micro-
soft Windows to fit their specific needs.
1.2. SOME OF ITS CAPABILITIES
While WinNav does not take the "everything and the kitchen sink"
approach of similar DOS utilities such as Lotus Magellan,
PCTools/PCShell and XTree, and certainly lacks in many of their
features, it offers one important capability that they don't --
it does Windows! As a result it shines in comparison to their
dull interface, allows better mouse control, provides familiar
controls and direct access to Windows clipboard.
Finding those hidden files are quick and simple through the use
of WinNav's local, branch and global explore features that allow
you to match multiple filespecs from any drive or directory on
your system and gather them into a single list window.

-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
Then scroll through each data or executable file in the list
while viewing its contents in the quick view window which offers
text, snoop, WordStar modes as well as ARC, ZIP and LZH directory
modes, or invoke a basic file type feature that provides an
alternative to invoking the DOS type command to view unlimited
length text files.
When you've located the file you want, WinNav can instantly open,
launch or run every file on your system, both executable and data
files, via any Windows or DOS application with only a few key-
strokes or clicks of a mouse button. It also provides the abil-
ity to launch groups of multiple applications, and to control
their display on the screen.
An alternative approach to exploring for files or file groups is
available through WinNav's unique implementation of "Alias Direc-
tories" which offers an escape from the archaic concept of direc-
tory trees and path name restrictions.
Its comprehensive "Pack" and "Unpack" features provides access to
popular file archive and compression utilities via launch dialog
panels. You'll quickly agree that WinNav offers the most sophis-
ticated and complete support available in any Windows applica-
tion, for SEA's and PK's ARC, LHARC and PKZIP archive or
compression utilities. In addition, it fully supports automated
conversions of packed files to and from *.ARC, *.LZH, *.ZIP,
*.PAK, *.DWC, *.CPR, *.LBR, *.SQZ, *.LZS, *.MD and *.ZOO compres-
sion formats, and virus scanning, with Kenneth Starling's CVT and
McAfee Associates' virus SCAN shareware utility programs,
together with the applicable DOS archive or library applications.
So even without the "kitchen sink" WinNav still provides some of
the basic and most useful features included in Lotus Magellan,
PCTools/PCShell and XTree, as well as a few features and capabil-
ities that even they don't offer.
1.3. THE NAVIGATOR IS "DEVELOPMENT-WARE"
As WinNav is an evolving application under continued development,
being a prototype for a Lotus Magellan/XTree type executive for

Microsoft Windows, and is distributed for evaluation purposes
through "shareware" channels, it should be considered
"Development-Ware" and not "shareware" per Se.
Generally, the term "shareware" refers to a relatively mature
copyrighted product which is being distributed for evaluation and
marketing purposes through non-retail channels.
Although "Development-Ware" is a copyrighted product distributed
and marketed as is shareware, it is far from a "mature" product,
but is submitted as an evolving application and development tool.
However, this should not imply that it is a "beta" version of an
application still undergoing testing -- "Development-Ware" is a
fully tested, finished product in the conventional sense. It is
rather a conceptual distinction, in a sense, a few utilities
extracted from a long wish list of what one might like to have in
the ultimate application program; not unlike a writers conception
of the "Great American Novel."
Furthermore, "Development-Ware" should not be confused with
"Cripple-Ware" or other types of demo programs which disable
functions in order to tease a user into purchasing a registered
copy. Any unimplemented functions in "Development-Ware," such as
WinNav, should be considered just that -- unimplemented; they
have not yet been fully developed or included in either the reg-
istered or unregistered versions, but are only "ideas" of possi-
ble functions that might be implemented or abandoned in future
releases of the application.
"Development-Ware" is distributed under four basic premises:
(1) If the product has proceeded to a point in develop-
ment and testing, as to offer features that users
need or can make use of now -- then let them use it
now!
(2) Products often develop in a vacuum without "real"
user feedback, this can result in the final applica-
tion duplicating the functions of other applications

-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
or having little or no value to the PC community, and
ultimately no market for the product --then don't
develop it if no one wants it!
(3) Quality software takes time and money to develop; and
for this reason, many needed applications and good
ideas never mature into final products simply because
small or part-time developers cannot compete with
commercial software developers and publishers and
therefore cannot afford to produce the final polished
product -- then solicit support for your application
and ideas at their inception, from other small devel-
opers and potential users!
(4) Worthwhile products will be supported, those that are
not should not be developed -- then only develop,
produce and enhance application when enough small
developers and "real" users express an interest in
and are willing to support it, through both registra-
tion and constructive feedback or through co-
development or contributions of useful code!
As indicated, distribution of "Development-Ware" of an applica-
tion can be of substantial benefit to both its developers and
ultimate users. It permits the user to benefit from many of the
features and functions of a final product, at little or no
expense; it provides "real" end-user input into the actual devel-
opment of a product, allowing the developer to consider those
features deemed important to the user and otherwise avoid
existing and foreseeable problems, whether real or cosmetic, that
might be incorporated into a final product and provides a means
of quickly remedying those problems as the application grows; it
allows the developer to associate other developers on a co-
operative basis, informally or contractual basis; it allows
single or multilevel versions of the product to be developed,
e.g., "shareware," "custom" and "retail" versions, and allows
spin-off products to be developed incorporating or standardizing
features; and it offsets development costs through registration
and licensing fees, through "shareware" and "custom" versions,
and remuneration and advances from commercial software publishers
and distributors. And, perhaps most importantly, it gives the

competition a peek and a shot a making their own products just a
little bit better; a chance to out program the competition rather
than litigate them into oblivion (users and the development com-
munity as a whole should not suffer by and simply don't benefit
from stagnated applications and interfaces from companies who try
to hold on to their market share without having to provide com-
petitive products).
Since its initial development in late 1988 and first public
release in May, 1989, WinNav has undergone many changes and has
received tremendous response and support from both its registered
users, and welcome feedback and suggestions from registered and
non-registered users alike. Judging from this response, I can
safely say that both the "Development-Ware" concept and the
shareware system is alive and flourishing as a viable means of
making quality software available at reasonable cost.
In creating WinNav, which I began as a simple learning exercise
and a development tool for a small file management and viewer
application, I set out to make a crude Windows application that
would allow one to view the first few lines of a file and then
copy and delete them as needed. However, my initial plans appar-
ently got sidetracked by some rather large gaps in the existing
shareware applications available to Windows users. In an attempt
to satisfy some of the basic needs of myself and as many other
Windows users as possible the plan for WinNav was conceived -- to
develop a quick, simple and intelligent executive for Microsoft
Windows, which would provide means of seeing what was in a file
before copying, deleting or renaming it, a way of running and
loading every day applications without having to create complex
menu files, a way of using most popular archive utilities from
within Windows without abandoning the graphic environment for the
DOS command line prompt, and, most importantly, providing Windows
with file explore and group features similar to existing DOS
applications. Hopefully, each version of WinNav moves a little
closer to these goals.
Along the way, many individuals have suggested features and
changes in the program that are not feasible in the current
design of WinNav or are simply beyond my present technical exper-
tise -- please keep in mind that I am a full time attorney in

WHY REGISTER NOW?
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
Houston, Texas, and WinNav is only a part-time project. However,
some of those user needs and suggestions have been merged into
the current design of WinNav, or may, if support and interest
continues and I can figure out how to do it technically and
financially, be implemented in future versions.
But don't expect the impossible, it is doubtful that the tremen-
dous power and capability of a DOS application such as Lotus
Magellan or PCTools can ever be satisfactory implemented in the
Windows environment as it now exists. Therefore, the user should
not expect WinNav to ever mature to the level Lotus Magellan, but
hopefully this author might be able to scratch the surface of
some of Magellan's more basic functions for the benefit of all
Windows users.
1.4. WHY REGISTER NOW?
Should you register WinNav now, or wait for the "finished" prod-
uct?
That depends ...
Hopefully, WinNav will never be a "mature" product per Se, but
will always be considered "Development-Ware" -- their are too
many enhancements that could be added and the wish list still
grows.
When the terms "not fully functional" are used in conjunction
with WinNav, they are used from the developer's standpoint and
not that of the user; it simply means that I hope to continue to
add many major enhancements to future releases of the applica-
tion, some of which may appear from time-to-time in grayed menu
items and non-functional dialog panels. These unimplemented
functions could just as well be omitted from a particular release
of WinNav, and it been called a "finished" product -- sort of
like dBase IV and the infamous 1.0 release. From a users' point
of view, however, many of its existing functions could in their
own rights be finished standalone products with capabilities
exceeding other Windows applications being commercially marketed.
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
The Navigator [0.50 09/30/90] It's FlashPoint WindowWare!
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
WELCOME -- Page 7
WHY REGISTER NOW?
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
So the foregoing should not be the basis of any decision not to
register the current version now.
Other future releases may include some basic text search and view
file format filters as does Magellan, PCTools and XTree, more
elaborate launching of applications and files, and a more graphi-
cal interface; however, this is only a "wish" list and not a
guarantee or warranty that such features will ever be implemented
-- the release of updated versions of WinNav, as with "share-
ware," will depend on the continued support of its registered
users.
Please keep in mind that WinNav will only continue to be enhanced
and released as "Development-Ware" through shareware channels, so
long as its users demonstrate continued interest and support for
the product.
Another good reason for registering the current release of WinNav
is that the basic registration fee for new users, generally, has
increased with each major enhancement to or release of WinNav,
whereas existing registered users continue to be able to upgrade
their versions for only a nominal fee.
At a minimum, registered users will generally be able to obtain
any version of WinNav that is distributed through shareware chan-
nels, for the cost of the media and handling (the current charge
is shown in the "Registered User's License" and "Order Forms"
sections of this User's Guide).
In addition, registered users, contributing to the support and
development of future versions of WinNav, will be given notice of
all major new releases, and provided with an authorization code
to disable the opening and closing prompts for registration of
their copy.
So we return to the question, "Should you register WinNav now, or
wait for the "finished" product?"

USE AND DISTRIBUTION OF UNREGISTERED COPIES
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
The answers are simple . . . register WinNav when it is useful to
you, when you find you are using its features on a regular basis,
if you want to contribute to and encourage its continued develop-
ment, if you want to save a few bucks by avoiding the increase in
registration on the next major release, when you're starting to
feel guilty, or . . . .
Full information on registration and licensing are contained
elsewhere in this manual.
1.5. USE AND DISTRIBUTION OF UNREGISTERED COPIES
Unregistered copies of WinNav are for evaluation purposes only,
and may be distributed through normal shareware channels. Please
distribute these evaluation copies to other bulletin boards and
users.
Each release of WinNav will be first posted on Fox Micro's BBS,
in Houston, Texas, at (713) 859-9105 (Public Node) and (713)

may find that the Windows and OS/2 conference and file area on
this board to be one of the best and most active in the Houston
area.
In addition copies are uploaded to various Compuserve forums'
software libraries, including the Microsoft Windows (MSWIN) and
third-party Windows Developers forums (WINAPA and WINAPB), the
Samna forum (SAMNA), and other Windows and PC related forums,
GEnie's Microsoft Connection, PKWare's BBS (414) 352-7176 and the

ABOUT THIS GUIDE
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
1.6. ABOUT THIS GUIDE
This guide is designed to help you explore and use WinNav for
Microsoft Windows; however, it, like WinNav, is in the develop-
ment stage, and is far from complete. Again, the point is to get
the application program to the user at the earliest possible date
in its development -- the manual, hopefully, will catch up later.
Besides, its always fun to investigate and discover undocumented
functions and uses for any application program.
Nevertheless, throughout this manual, every effort has been made
explain those functions applicable to this release of WinNav, and
to point out those functions which have not been implemented;
hopefully, this will avoid needless confusion and frustration for
its users.

II. LEARNING TO NAVIGATE
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
2.1. STARTING WINNAV
WinNav may be activated as is any other Windows Application, and
may also be installed in the "load" or "run" sections of the
WIN.INI file.
2.2. USING WINNAV
2.2.1. General Features and Commands
Function menus or dialog panels, as most features of WinNav,
can be invoked through the menu bar, either through the use of
the keyboard or mouse. They may be canceled by pressing the
[ESC] key or a "Quit" ([Alt]+[Q]) button exit any dialog panel.
Their default commands and options can be selected by clicking
with the mouse, or by using the [Tab], space bar or cursor
keys, and invoked by pressing the [Enter] key or by the "OK"
([Alt]+[O]) button.
Other functions or selections are invoked by accelerator and
Alt-Key combinations. The Alt-Key combination may be used by
pressing the [Alt] key in combination with a character key
which matches a window or dialog control that has an underlined
character displayed. Accelerator keys can be located by invok-
ing the various "Help" menus or by pressing the [F1] function
key, other accelerator key combinations may be found in
applicable sections throughout this manual.
Message boxes are displayed on the screen automatically, and
can be canceled by pressing the "space bar" or an "OK"
([Alt]+[O]) button.

-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
"Cursor keys" generally include the left, right, up and down
arrow keys, the [Home], [End], [Page Up] and [Page Down].
These may also be used in some instances in combination with
the [Shift] and [Ctrl] keys, for example, the [Ctrl]+[Right
Arrow] or [Left Arrow] keys can toggle between the list and
view windows, and the [Shift]+[Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow] key
combinations are used to mark multiple file selections in the
list window.
Key and mouse controls may be different if the directory list-
ing or view windows have the current or active focus.
WinNav's window size and location can be manipulated through
the use of the system menu (invoked by pressing the [Alt]+[-
SpaceBar] key combination or by clicking the mouse on the [-]
system menu symbol in the upper left corner of WinNav's parent
window), maximized by pressing [Alt]+[F10] combination, mini-
mized by the [Alt]+[F9] keys, sized by the [Alt]+[F8] and cur-
sor keys, moved by the [Alt]+[F7] and cursor keys, or restored
by pressing the [Alt]+[F5] key combination. The mouse can also
be used to maximize, minimize or restore the applications win-
dow by clicking on the up and down arrow symbols in the upper
right of WinNav's parent windows, double clicking the caption
bar or by dragging the window border..
2.2.2. The Directory List
Upon loading WinNav, you are then presented with a listing of
the current directory from which you may select a file, drive
or directory, together with various child windows that provide
you with current information.
The default for the list of files is *.* which displays all
files in the current or designated directory, unless a file was
named in the command line used to invoke WinNav..
The List menu commands allows the directory list to display
global and recursive file specifications from every disk or
drive on the user's system, which are selected through the use
of the Local, Branch and Global Explore dialog panels; these

drive and directory searches.
In addition you may assign and select an Alias Directory or
Group listing from either the Local or Branch dialog panels and
search for multiple preassigned groups of files from the Global
Explore dialog panel.
Selections are made by moving the listbox current selection
bar, up or down, to the desired file, directory or drive item.
This is accomplished through the use of the up and down key-
board cursor control keys, e.g., the page up or down, home or
end or up and down arrow keys, or by clicking or dragging a
mouse.
Multiple file names may be selected by dragging the mouse over
the listed file names or through the use of the [Shift] and
[Ctrl] keys in conjunction with the arrow or cursor keys or
clicking the left mouse button.
The "List" window may be toggled from standard to Maximized
(Zoom) modes by (1) repeatedly pressing the [F8] function key
while the list box has the current focus, or (2) the "Window"
pop-up menu's "Max List" option. In addition, the Max List
mode can be invoked by pressing the [F11] function key even
when the "List" window does not have the current focus. The
list window can be subsequently restored to standard split Col-
umn mode by pressing the [F9] function key.
WinNav's "List" and "Quick View" windows may be switched from
standard to split Row screen mode by (1) pressing the [F10]
function key, or (2) the "Window" pop-up menu's "Rows" option.
To restore the standard Column mode (1) press the [F9] function
key or (2) select the "Columns" option from the "Window" pop-up
menu.

2.2.3. Changing Drives and Directories
You may select a new directory or disk drive from the directory
list, by one of the following options: and then switch to it by
either pressing the return key or by double-clicking on it with
the mouse.
(1) Selecting the drive or directory with the cursor
control keys and then pressing return, or
(2) Pointing to the drive or directory and then double-
clicking the left mouse button.
(3) Backing up the directory tree by pressing the [Left
Arrow] key while in the "List" mode. This option
will result in the list box switching to the parent
of the current subdirectory until the root direc-
tory is reached; thereafter, pressing the [Left
Arrow] key will first collapse the directory to
display only subdirectories and disk drives, and a
second press will collapse the list box to display
system drives only.
The current path or directory may also be changed through the
List menu bar's "List" "Local" selection ([Alt]+[L], then [L])
keyboard combination, which displays the "Path Explore" panel.
The Path panel provides a simple set path to edit boxes where
the full pathspec, including designated filespec, may be manu-
ally typed.
More powerful and sophisticated Path panel features may be pro-
vided through preassigned "Alias Directories." The Alias
Directories' listings may be added to, updated or deleted by
use of the "New," "Update" and "Remove" buttons immediately
below the Alias Directories list box.
There is also a multiple selection extension ("Ext") listing
which will automatically complete the files to be selected edit
box with one or more selected file extensions and wildcards.

The Path Explore panel also allows you to designate whether to
include Hidden, Read Only and System Files, Drives or Directory
names in the resulting list window by checking the appropriate
check boxes. Whereas the "Display" group of grayed buttons
indicate what file or directory information will be displayed
in either a Row or Maximized List window.
The Path panel also provides the ability to recurse all subdi-
rectories of the designated directory path, for inclusion of
matching files in the resulting list window, by simply marking
the appropriate check box. The Branch List menu selection
invokes an identical Path Explore dialog panel, but with the
recurse all subdirectories box already checked.
2.2.4. "Quick View"
The "Quick View" window, located to the right of the List win-
dow in standard "Columns" mode or below the list in the split
"Rows" mode, will display the initial lines of the currently
selected file. This window will be updated automatically when
you select a new file and release the cursor control key or
left mouse button.
The View window attempts to automatically determine the appro-
priate view mode for the current selected file, directory or
drive in the List window, and display it in the following
modes:
Text Text Attempts to display files in a simple
ASCII/ANSI text mode.
Text Snoop Attempts to extract all printable text from
any
file, whether a data or executable file.
Text WordStar Attempts to display files in a text mode
(7 bit) after striping the high order bit (used by
various applications such as WordStar for
storing printer and control characters/com-
mands).

file.
Dir ZIP Dir Shows a directory of the contents of a
*.ZIP archive/compressed file.
DIr Tree Shows the directory of the selected drive
or pathname (or the parent of the current
directory if the [..] abrievation is
selected.
If a valid file name is selected from the directory list box,
the "Quick View" window will attempt to display a partial
contents of the file. Approximately the first 10,000 bytes of
the file are read into the internal view window; the percentage
indicator at the lower right of WinNav's window indicates the
approximate percentage of the total file read into memory --
files less that 10k in length should display 100% read.
In the Text, Snoop and WordStar modes the initial lines of a
text or ASCII files will be displayed in the view window, but
may not retain their proper formatting.
Executable and binary files shows text extracted from the non-
text file, however, this text will not necessarily be from con-
tiguous portions of the file, and may contain a certain amount
of garbage, i.e., characters appearing in the file but which
are not really words. While this unformated view mode may seem
like nonsense at times, the Snoop mode is excellent for reading
font types from *.fon files, as well as allowing you to read
sufficient text in certain wordprocessing files such as Windows
Write, Word, Word for Windows, WordPerfect, Ami/Ami Pro and
Lotus Manuscript document files to identify the files contents
-- thereafter you can launch the appropriate application for a
formatted view or editing session.

Files compressed in the *.ARC, *.PAK, *.LZH, *.LZS, *.ICE or
*.ZIP formats will have their internal file directories dis-
played in the view window.
Using "Quick Views" Extended Features
When the list directory is the active window or has the
"focus," the "Quick View" window displays the file as indi-
cated above. To access its extended features, the view
window must be given the focus; this is done by (1) pressing
the [Ctrl]+[ -> ] (control and right arrow key) combina-
tions, (2) selecting the "To View" option from the List
mode's "Window" menu's "Toggle" option, or (3) by clicking a
mouse on the "Quick View" window area.
When the view window gains the focus, the List mode menu bar
is replaced with the View mode menu bar, and the "List" mode
indicator on the upper right information bar changes to
"View." The user can now use the keyboard cursor keys or
mouse and scroll bars to move through the file being viewed,
and invoke various selections from the new menu bar.
The "Quick View" window may be toggled from standard to
Maximized (Zoom) modes by (1) repeatedly pressing the [F8]
function key while the view window has the current focus, or
(2) the "Window" pop-up menu's "Max View" option. In addi-
tion, the Max View (Zoom) mode can be invoked by pressing
the [F12] function key even when it does not have the
current focus, and subsequently restored to standard mode by
pressing the [F9] function key.
WinNav's "List" and "Quick View" windows may be switched
from standard Column mode to a split Rows screen mode by (1)
pressing the [F10] function key, or (2) the "Window" pop-up
menu's "Rows" option. To restore the standard Column mode
(1) press the [F9] function key or (2) select the "Columns"
option from the "Window" pop-up menu.

Using the "Quick View" Window as a "Quick Editor"
WinNav's "Quick View" window can also be used as a "Quick
Editor," while still protecting the file from any possibil-
ity of being modified. When viewing the file you are view-
ing a portion of the file read into memory and not the file
itself, and when you modify the file all modifications take
place in the view window only. Therefore, the user can
modify the view of the displayed file, and then use Windows
clipboard to perform various copy, move, paste and delete
functions; this allows text to be saved and retrieved
through the clipboard and to cut and pasted into any other
text processor (even a DOS wordprocessor) or application
such as a terminal program.
You can even use the "Edit" menu's "Delete All" feature to
completely erase the view windows contents, type in excess
of 20k of text, and then use the "Edit" menu's "Select All"
and "Cut" or "Copy options to move it to the clipboard for
use in another Windows or DOS application. Again, these
changes are performed exclusively in the memory allocated to
the viewer and will not modify the original disk file
itself.
Using External Viewers
The entire file may be viewed through any user configured
external viewer, list or browse utilities by (1) pressing
the [Ctrl]+[F6] or [Shift]+[F6] keys, or (2) by use of the
pop-up "File" menu's "Type" function, or the "View" menu's
"User Viewer 1" and User Viewer 2" options; another option
is through the use of the "File" menu's "Launch" and "Open"
selections.
The [Ctrl]+[F6] and [Shift]+[F6] function key combinations
will invoke the user designated Viewer 1 and Viewer 2,
respectively. For these functions to work properly and to
their full capabilities, the user is required to customize
the WINNAV.INI file as described in "Getting Started" sec-
tion of this manual.

The "Launch Panel" may also be invoked by double clicking on
the listed file's name. This allows the user to select any
application which has been pre-configured through use of the
"New" or "Update" listbox setup buttons, and to launch it
with the appended file name and preset parameters.
When the "Launch Panel" is invoked the currently selected
file becomes the default file displayed in the dialog pan-
el's "File" edit box window. WinNav will then check the
file's extension against those appearing in the user
configurable [Launch Extensions] section of the Windows'
WINNAV.INI file or, if it can find no match there, against
those appearing in the [extensions] section of the WIN.INI
file; if WinNav finds a match, it will automatically select
the appropriate appropriate application and parameters, and
set the "Primary Task" edit window box accordingly.

2.2.5. Launching a File
You may "launch," i.e., load and run, the currently selected
file, a single application or groups of multiple applications,
through WinNav's enhanced Launch, Open and Run facilities. Any
file, including Windows or MS-DOS applications or data files,
may be launched by one of the following options:
(1) Selecting the file with the cursor control keys and
then pressing return,
(2) Pointing to the file name and then double-clicking
the left mouse button,
(3) Selecting the file with either the cursor control
keys or mouse, and then chosing the File/Launch
pull down menu, with the [Alt]+[F] then [L] keys or
the mouse, or

(4) Selecting the file with either the cursor control
keys or mouse, and then pressing the [F7] key.
With respect to executable files, i.e., those having an *.EXE,
*.COM, *.BAT or *.PIF file extension, options (1) and (2) will
immediately load and run the application; options (3) and (4)
invoke the Launch dialog panel, which allows the user to enter
any desired parameters, e.g., the name of a data file.
The "File Open" command will immediately launch the associated
application, if any, and load the selected file, without
prompting for additional user input. Only WinNav's "File Open"
menu options will load and run a non-executable file automati-
cally, all other functions will invoke either the Launch or Run
dialog panels, which will allow the file's associated
application program to be verified or an alternative selected.
If a non-executable file is selected, and if that files exten-
sion appears in either the [Launch Extensions] section of the
WINNAV.INI file or the [extensions] section of the WIN.INI,
then the default Launch "Primary Task" window will display the
filespec of the application extracted from the INI file that
has been previously associated with that extension.
The "File Run" command is designed or initially configured to
run applications and generally ignores the selected file.
2.2.6. The "File" Menu Functions

DOS Prompt
Exit
Open
Purpose: This command will allow any selected file to be
"opened" -- the associated application program
together with the selected file will be ran and
loaded. This feature, although much more
advanced, is similar to the features available
under the Windows File Manager and MS-DOS Execu-
tive applications, and provides the user with the
capability of immediately launching Windows and
DOS applications, utilities and even data files,
and a simple an intelligent way to invoke an all
but unlimited number of user specified applica-
tion programs.
In order to determine which application is asso-
ciated with the selected file, WinNav first
examines the [Launch Extensions] section of the
WINNAV.INI file, and, if no matching extension is
found, then examines the [extensions] section of
the WIN.INI file. If no matching extension is
found in either INI file, WinNav advises the
user, and then invokes the "Associate" dialog
function to allow the user to install the
required information in the selected files.
Note: This version of WinNav requires that the user
manually edit the [Run Buttons] section of the
WINNAV.INI file, in order to customize the but-
tons and their associated applications; this may
be done with the Windows Notepad utility, or any
other ASCII/ANSI "text" editor.
See, the "Associate" function and installation
sections of this manual.

Launch ...
Purpose: This command will allow any selected file, appli-
cation or multiple applications to be "launched"
-- it replaces or combines the run, load,
associate and group options available under the
Windows Program Manager, File Manager and MS-DOS
Executive, with more advanced options. It can
provide the user with the capability of launching
Windows and DOS applications, utilities and even
data files, and a simple an intelligent way to
invoke an all but unlimited number of user speci-
fied application programs.
Prior to actually invoking the application, or a
data file and an application, the Launch dialog
panel will appear, prompting the user to accept
the proposed default application (provided one
has been previously "associated" with the current
file type), to select a group or task from the
listbox menu, or to manually type the desired
information in the applicable edit window.
In addition, the Launch Panel provides an
Extended Command edit window which allows the
user to invoke multiple applications or command
line tokens at the same time. Each command line
token or application is required to be separated
by a comma "," in order to be properly processed
by WinNav.
Format:
calc.exe, cardfile.exe, winword.exe
Both the Primary and Extended Commands allow the
user to select how the command group will be
displayed, i.e., in a window, iconic or full
screen, whether the selected file should be
appended to the primary application, whether Win-

The "Group/Task Menu" listbox can be configured
through the use of the "New," "Update" or "Re-
move" keys, and can support nested submenus up to
five levels deep. The current menu or level is
displayed immediately above the listbox. To move
down a level simply double-click the mouse or
press the [Enter] key on the desired listing; to
move back up a level, press the [Esc] key.
Double-clicking or pressing [Enter] on a non-menu
item will immediately launch that application
group. A menu or level listing is identified by
a "..." in the "Primary Task" edit window.
Note: In this release of WinNav, only the first for
windowed applications will be tilled, if that
option is selected.
Also, refer to sections on associating and
launching files for additional information.

The "File" menu "Run" command allows the immediately start
an application program, generally without loading the
selected file. This command is similar to other "Run" func-
tions of various Windows application in that it allows the
user to manually type in any desired application program and
parameters. However, it also provides several advanced
functions, such as the drive or directory to log to prior to
invoking the application program, allowing selection as to
how the application should be displayed, i.e., in a window,
as an icon or full screen, whether WinNav is to be minimized
or the window display tiled.

The Run dialog panel also provides twelve user definable
application push buttons, to speed invocation of commonly
used application programs. When the desired push button is
selected, the specified application is run; all other param-
eters or Run panel options are ignored, and WinNav only
invokes the options that the user has defined in the [Run

Type
Purpose: This command will type or list a document file in
a window in a manner similar to the DODS "TYPE"
command.
THis command allows the user to scroll through
text files of unlimited length. All features
such as pause, resume or cancel can be invoked by
the menu options; in addition, the [Alt] or
[Spacebar] keys may be pressed to toggle the
scroll on and off, as well as double-clicking the
mouse button on the view window.
Warning: In this release of WinNav, the command runs an
external Windows list utility, WINLST.EXE, which
is provided with WinNav. WinType is actually an
application still in the early stages of develop-
ment, and as a result has not been extensively
"beta" tested.
As Windows 3.0 is much more touchy than Windows
2.1, and can be more tempremental on some
machines than others, WinType should be used
sparingly and with caution, until you can deter-
mine its suitability on your own equipment. An
internal version of a similar viewer should be
incorporated in one of the next few releases of
WinNav.
Associate ...
Purpose: This command is an advanced version of the Win-

ate capabilities. It is used to "associate" a
certain file type as identified with its file
extensions, with a default application program.

Purpose: This command is used to update the list window
directory for the current directory, and gener-
ally should be used after performing copy,
archive compression, expansion or conversion, or
other disk directory writes or deletions from
external applications; this release of WinNav
does not automatically update the listing after
any of these external events.

The "Alias DIrectory" feature provides the user
with a menans of referencing vany directory and
multiple filespecs within directories in a less
cryptic manner than typing their archaic DOS tree
names.
You can also change drives by backing up the
directory list tree with the [LEFT ARROW] key, or
by pressing the [END] key, which will move to the
to the directory and drive area of the List
Window, selecting the applicable drive (or direc-
tory) and pressing [ENTER].

are performed by the respective external DOS applica-
tions and not by WinNav.
A detailed explanation of their operation has not
been included with this manual due to space and time
limitations. A full discussion of each availible DOS
applications commands and switches can be found in
the documentation accompaning the DOS shareware
applications.
Please refer to the "Getting Started" section of this
manual which explains how to install the REQUIRED
information in your WINNAV.INI file. Also refer to
the appendix of this manual for additional informa-
tion.
Note that the ARC.EXE, PKARC.COM, PKXARC.COM,
LHARC.EXE, PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, PKZIPFIX.EXE,
CVT.COM, SCAN.EXE and other related support programs
and any PIF files MUST BE INSTALLED in the current
directory or in a directory referenced by the DOS
environment "PATH=" (see, Appendix D, and Getting

own user documentation for information of the various
commands and options available to each, and other
required installation procedures.

THE DISTRIBUTION DISKS
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
III. GETTING STARTED
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
3.1. THE DISTRIBUTION DISKS
The unregistered version of WinNav is originally distributed in
the form of a self extracting archive file (although it may have
been converted by others to an ARC, ZIP, PAK or LZH compressed
file format). The distribution file should contain the following
files:
WINNAV.EXE The Windows Navigator (WinNav) application
program.
WINNAV.INI A sample Windows Navigator (WinNav) informa-
tion and configuration data file. You should
always review this file as it may contain
configuration information that has changed
since the last update of the users' guide.
REGISTER.DOC This file contains important information on
registering or licensing this release of Win-
Nav (this document is also contained in an
appendix to the users guide).
TYPEDOCS.BAT This batch file will use the DOS copy command
to output WinNav User's Guide (WINNAV.DOC) to
your printer.
WINNAV.DOC WinNav's User's Guide (this guide may be in
multiple files identified as WINNAV##.DOC).
The disk sets which may be purchased from the author consist of
the "Program Disk," which contains each of the aforementioned
files and any supplemental information files which may be added
from time-to-time, and a "Utility Disk," which contains an
assortment of unregistered copies of various shareware applica-
tions that are supported by or that may be used in conjunction
with WinNav.

WHAT YOU NEED
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
The applications contained on the "Utility Disk" are either pub-
lic domain or shareware, and may be distributed by you in accor-
dance with the terms and conditions specified by their respective
authors; please keep in mind that if you continue to use
shareware applications, you must register or license it directly
with its author (by registering WinNav, you have not aquired a
license to any of the shareware applications contained on the
"Utility Disk"). Generally, these same utilities may be down-
loaded by modem from most local BBS systems, Compuserve and
GEnie, or are distributed on disks by various public software
library services.
Please do not distribute any programs are files contained on the
"Program Disk" as they are only for your personal use; the only
exception to this is the unregistered archived copy of WinNav,
which may be provided on either the "Program Diak" or "Utility
Disk" as space is available. Any distribution contrary to the
foregoing limitations is prohibited by the respective authors and
may be actionable under various local and federal laws.
3.2. WHAT YOU NEED
To use WinNav, you need the following:
Microsoft Windows (version 3.0 or later)
MS-DOS/PC-DOS (version 3.0 or a later version required by
your version of Microsoft Windows)
A pointing device, e.g., mouse, is recommended
A Microsoft Windows supported graphics adapter card (EGA or
VGA is highly recommended)
In addition you will need the application and utility programs
specified in "Appendix D" as well as the standard DOS and Windows
applications you normally use.

DEFAULT INSTALLATION
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
3.3. DEFAULT INSTALLATION
A default version of WinNav is easily installed, by copying the
files WINNAV.EXE and WINNAV.INI to your Windows directory; how-
ever, many of its features will not be fully functional, until
you reconfigure it for your own system and to fully support all
of your Windows and DOS applications.
The instructions in this section are primarily provided for user
customization.
Generally, WinNav will attempt to use internal defaults for those
settings which do not appear in the either the sample WINNAV.INI
file or your current WIN.INI file; however, these defaults may
rely on certain PIF files and your systems DOS environment set-
tings, and may not function properly if certain settings have
been omitted. For example, all external applications or their
respective PIF files must be located in a directory accessible by
through the DOS "path=" setting.
3.4. CUSTOMIZING THE "WINNAV.INI" FILE
The WINNAV.INI is a configuration file that is used by both Win-
Nav. It contains a series of sections, keywords and settings,
similar to those in the WIN.INI file, that generally appear in
the following format:
[section1 name]
keyword1=setting1, setting2, setting3 ...
keyword2=setting1, setting2, setting3 ...
[section2 name]
keyword1=setting1, setting2, setting3 ...
keyword2=setting1, setting2, setting3 ...
The section name appears in brackets, and each keyword begins on
a new line and is followed by an equal (=) sign and the appli-
cable setting. Multiple settings are often used, and are gener-
ally (but not always) separated by a comma and a space.

CUSTOMIZING THE "WINNAV.INI" FILE
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
3.4.1. Editing the "WINNAV.INI" File
Although most available user configurable features can be added
or updated from within WinNav, you may wish to make changes
directly to your WINNAV.INI file; this can be done with any
ASCII text file editor, e.g., Windows' Notepad.
To change WINNAV.INI settings directly, follow these steps:
1. Open WINNAV.INI from your text editor in an ASCII or
nondocument mode.
2. Locate the section name, keyword or settings you want
to change.
3. Edit the section name, keyword or settings.
4. Save your changes to the WINNAV.INI file.
5. Quit (generally you do not need to reload Windows but
may need to reload WinNav).
Remember that changes you make to WINNAV.INI generally, but not
always, take effect when the appropriate WinNav feature is
invoked; however some features may require you to follow the
better practice of reloading WinNav after you've made changes
to the INI files.
For more information on editing and using INI files, please
refer to your Microsoft Window's User Guide.
3.4.2. Sections, Keywords and Settings
WinNav currently makes use of the following WINNAV.INI sections
and keywords (in addition it uses the WIN.INI [extensions] sec-
tion for supplemental information). In addition, you should
check the sample WIN.INI file which may include some changes
since the last revision of this manual.

3.4.3. The [WinNav] Section
The [WinNav] section of the WINNAV.INI file is used to install
many of the custom user features available under WinNav. The
keywords "userviewer1", "userviewer2" and "utlarc" are the only
keywords whose options must be manually installed by a user
using a text editor; all other keywords are either installed
automatically by or from within the WinNav application.

Purpose: The "utlarc=" keyword allows the user to desig-
nate an alternate external application program
that is to be invoked for unpacking files which
have a "ARC" extension. For example, the user
may prefer to use PKXARC.COM rather than ARC.EXE.
Syntax: utlarc=
Where "" is the full DOS drive,
path, file name and extension for the application
to be invoked.
Examples: utlarc=c:\win386\pif\pkxarc.pif

Tip: tion will be either ARC or PKXARC, and looks for
the letters "pk" in the application specified in
the "utilarc=" setting to determine the appli-
cable Unpack dialog panel to invoke. Therefore,
other alternate applications must conform to the
command and options syntax of either SEA's ARC or
PKXARC to work with the applicable dialog panel,
and, if the PKXARC dialog panel is to be used,
the alternate application must contain the let-
ters "pk" in its file name. For example, NoGate
Consulting's PAK.EXE, could be configured to
emulate PKXARC's command and options sytax, and
be invoked by using an alias PIF file named
"PKXARC.PIF."
Keywords: User and License [Internal]
Purpose: These Keywords and their respective settings are
created and updated by WinNav, as a result of a
user providing the appropriate registration
information for his or her copy of WinNav at the
applicable prompts.
If a copy of WinNav has been duly registered,
each time it is reloaded, it will immediately run
the application without the startup and closing
prompts that appear in unregistered evaluation
copies.
Warning: Users of unregistered evaluation copies of WinNav
should not attempt to manually edit this informa-
tion or provide false information at the regis-
tration dialog panel from within WinNav.

Keywords: Winx, Winy, Winw and Winh [Internal]
Purpose: These Keywords and their respective settings are
automatically created and updated by WinNav, and
need not be modified by the user. They represent
the coordinates of WinNav's parent window; they
are read when WinNav is first invoked, and are
updated or saved upon exiting WinNav and respond-
ing "Yes" to the save current display query.
Each time WinNav is reloaded, it will size its
parent window to the coordinates last used when
it was previously run.
Tip: When WinNav is invoked for the first time, size
its parent window, with either the system menu
"Size" command or a mouse, and then exit the
application; this will save the current coordi-
nates of the parent window. Then each time the
application is invoked it will automatically size
itself to these coordinates.
Keyword: Split, Zoom and ShowWin [Internal]
Purpose: These Keywords and their settings are automati-
cally created and updated by WinNav, and need not
be modified by the user. The setting stores
information as to whether WinNav's parent window
was in the Column, Row, Maximize List or Maximize
View modes or if WinNav was displayed as an icon,
in a window or full screen when it was last
exited; the setting is read when WinNav is first
invoked, and are updated or saved upon exiting
WinNav and responding "Yes" to the save current
display query.
Each time WinNav is reloaded, it will automati-
cally select the display and modes based on those
in effect when it was last used or previously
run.

3.4.4. The [Pack] Section
The [Pack] section of the WINNAV.INI file is used to install
many of the Pack and Unpack features available under WinNav.
Keyword: unpackto
Purpose: The "unpackto=" keyword allows the user to desig-
nate the drive and directory where archived files
are to be unpacked. This setting will be
displayed as the default when any of the unpack
dialog panels are first displayed.
Syntax: unpackto=
Where "" is a valid system drive, and
"" is the full qualified directory name.
The path name must end with a backslash ("\").

The path name must end with a backslash ("\").
Examples: packto=c:\archive\
Default: None.
3.4.5. The [Run Buttons] Section
There are twelve user configurable "Run" buttons which appear
in two rows on the "Run" dailog panel. On the top row from the
left the button keywords are LB1, LB2, LB3, LB4, LB5 and LB6;
the bottom row of button keywords are LB7, LB8, LB9, LB10, LB11
and LB12, again from left to right.
Each button's settings allow the user to designate a brief
title for the application to be displayed within the button,
the full path and file name for the application to be invoked,
and a decimal value which tells WinNav to include or ignore the
parameter line when launching the application (a "0" to ignore
the displayed parameter line or a "1" to include it).
The buttons, if not configured by the user, will contain a
selection of default Microsoft Windows applications. Those
applications, such as NOTEPAD.EXE and PBRUSH.EXE, which accept
a commandline parameter, have been configured to ignore the
selected file, i.e., to run the application without an appended
file name; those that do not, such as CLOCK.EXE and CALC.EXE,
also will ignore any parameter lines.

The following explains how to configure the keyword options of
the [Run Buttons] section of the WINNAV.INI file. Additional
or updated configuration information is contained in the sample
WINNAV.INI file and Appendix C, of this manual.
Keyword: LB# (LB1 through LB12)
Purpose: The "LB#=" keyword allows the user to customize
an application push button on the Run dialog
panel, so that it will invoke an application
other than the default.
Syntax: LB1=, ,
LB2=, ,
LB3=, ,
LB4=, ,
LB5=, ,

LB7=, ,
LB8=, ,
LB9=, ,
LB10=, ,
LB11=, ,

in the push button, and may include an "&" before
any character to designate an Alt-Key combination
to be as a shortcut. Note that certain Alt-Key
combinations are used by the Run dialog panel and
should not be duplicated by the control buttons.
The "" is the full DOS drive, path,
file name and extension for the application to be
invoked.
The "" is a decimal number "0" or "1"
which tells the Run panel whether or not the
dialog's parameter line is to be appended to the
launched application's commandline. If the

3.4.6. The [Launch Main Menu] and User SubMenu Sections
The settings in the [Launch Main Menu] section of the WIN-
NAV.INI file contain information that is required to launch a
Windows or DOS application from the "Group/Task Menu" listbox
of the "Launch" dialog panel. Due to the complex nature of
these settings, you should add, modify or delete all list menus

and items only from within the Launch panel, using the "New,"
"Update" and "Remove" push buttons which invoke the Launch
setup panel.
Note that submenus in this version of WinNav may be nested to
only the fifth level.
Default: None.
Shortcut: You may use the "New," "Update" and "Remove" push
buttons, in conjunction with the invoked Setup
panel, to add, modify or delete the entries appear-
ing in the "Group/Task Menu" listbox.
The "Group/Task Menu" list will be updated immedi-
ately as a result of any addition, update or dele-
tion; you do not have to exit the Launch panel or
reload Windows in order for WinNav to detect these
changes in the WINNAV.INI file.
Tips: When a character key is pressed and the "Group/Task
Menu" window has the current focus, the current
selection bar of the list box will scroll to the
next task title that begins with the character of
the key pressed. Therefore, task titles should use
different first letters whenever possible. In order
to group all submenus in one location, you may
precede their titl with a common character such as a
perio "." or a right bracket ">", etc.
3.4.7. The [Launch Extensions] Section
WinNav's [Launch Extensions] section of the WINNAV.INI file is
more complex than the Window's [extensions] section, and gener-
ally should not be manually edited; generally, all additions,
modifications or deletions should be made through the "File"
menu "Associate" option panel. This section is used by the
"File Open" and "File Launch" selections to determine the
default application or groups of applications to associate with
a specific file type or extension.

-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
GETTING STARTED -- Page 64
CUSTOMIZING THE "WINNAV.INI" FILE
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
When any file is selected and then the "File Open" or "File
Launch" functions are invoked, WinNav compares its file exten-
sion with those appearing as keywords in the [Launch Exten-
sions] section of the WINNAV.INI file (or if no match is found,
then the WIN.INI [extensions] section); if it locates a match
it will display the WINNAV.INI application setting for that
file extension as the default application of the "Launch Panel"
or will immediately invoke the associated application and load
the selected file if the "File Open" option was selected.
If the user invoked the "File Launch" panel, he or she is then
given the opportunity to load the file into either the default
application or to select another application for the task.
This offers another significant advantage over the File Manager
or MS-DOS Executive associate functions and similar functions
in other file managers, in that it does not require the user to
elect to include in the [extension] section of the WINNAV.INI
file either an application program, e.g., an editor such as
Notepad, or a viewer application. Now the [extensions] section
can be used exclusively for applications that manipulate data
files, and the [View Extensions] section for launching external
view only applications (which generally load significantly
faster than databases, wordprocessors, etc.).
Furthermore, designating associated extensions will not limit
the user to a single application program, e.g., selecting a
file with the *.TXT extension might display a default viewer or
editor application, but the user is given the opportunity to
change this default automatically via the Launch panel's
"Group/Task Menu" or manually through the primary task edit
window. Thus, common file extensions may be used by more than
one application.
As the [Launch Extensions] settings was originally patterned
after the Windows' [extensions] section, and as the [exten-
sions] setting of the WIN.INI file may also be used by the
"File" menu's "Open" and "Launch" selections, it may be helpful
to also refer to the Microsoft Window's User Guide for more
information on configuring settings in this section of the WIN-

NAV.INI file. Also review the sample WINNAV.INI and the appen-
dix of this users' guide for more configuration information and
examples.
3.4.8. The Windows' [extensions] Section
WinNav also makes use of the settings in the Windows' [exten-
sions] section of the WIN.INI file, if it does not find a match
in the WINNAV.INI files [Launch Extensions] section.
When a non-executable, e.g., data file, is selected to be
launched, WinNav may also compare its file extension with those
appearing as keywords in the [extensions] section of the
WIN.INI file; if it locates a match it will display the WIN.INI
application setting for that file extension as the default pri-
mary task in the Launch Panel. The user is then given the
opportunity to load the file into either the default
application or to select another application for the task.
Please refer to your Microsoft Window's User Guide for more
information on configuring settings in this section of the
WIN.INI file.
3.5. CREATING PIF FILES FOR DOS APPLICATIONS
WinNav can be used with both Windows and DOS applications; in
fact this is the main basis for developing this application -- to
integrate the DOS operating system and applications with the Win-
dows environment.
The internally defined standard DOS applications (see, Appendix
D) used by WinNav are invoked by launching a PIF file. It
should be noted that WinNav looks for *.EXE or *.COM extension,
WIndows first checks for a *.PIF file.
When installing your own DOS application, be sure that, if it
requires more than nominal memory and is not located within your

-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
DOS environment path, a PIF file for the application is created.
Refer to this PIF file when invoking the application and not to
the executable *.COM or *.EXE file itself.
Suggested or required PIF file names for many of the internally
defined functions such as Pack and Unpack options are set forth
in Appendix D, of this manual.
Also refer to the Microsoft Windows User's Guide, for information
on using the PIF Editor and properly configuring your PIF file.
3.6. DOS ENVIRONMENT SETTINGS
In Windows, just as in DOS, your DOS environment settings are
important. If an application is not found in the default or
Windows directories, Windows will search the "Path=" setting of
your environment setting to determine additional directories and
drives to search.
Furthermore, many DOS applications such as PKZIP.EXE, PKUN-
ZIP.EXE, LHARC.EXE and ARC.EXE rely on the DOS environment set-
tings when run from Windows, just as they do when run from DOS.
Therefore, the applicable users' manuals should be referred to,
in order to properly setup the DOS environment variables for each
application. Generally, if the application has been properly set
up to run outside of Windows, it will run properly within Windows
and from WinNav's dialog panels -- that is if the PIF files have
also been properly configured.

IV. DISTRIBUTION, REGISTRATION AND LICENSING
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
WinNav is copyright and has been released for evaluation pur-
poses; it may be distributed as "Development-Ware" through normal
shareware channels.
4.1. PERMISSIBLE DISTRIBUTION
To ensure future development and support of WinNav, you are
encouraged to distribute unregistered, evaluation copies to oth-
ers.
Operators of electronic bulletin boards (Sysops) are encouraged
to post WinNav for downloading by their users.
WinNav may be uploaded to and downloaded from commercial systems
such as CompuServe, the Source, and BIX, so long as the only
charge paid by the subscriber is for on-line time and there is no
charge for the product itself. Those copying, sharing, and/or
electronically transmitting this product are required not to
delete or modify the copyright notice and restrictive notices
from the program or documentation; anyone doing so may be subject
to civil damages and criminal prosecution.
If you are passing WinNav on to others, uploading it to a bulle-
tin board system, or including it in a users group library, do
not separate the files contained in the packed ARC, ZIP or LZH
file -- pass the entire packed file on to the intended party.
This ensures that those who receive the product will have all the
correct configuration utilities and documentation necessary to
get WinNav up and running quickly. A listing of what files you
should have and the purpose of each is listed later in this man-
ual.
WinNav documentation may not be modified, nor may be distributed
separate from the application program. In addition, the distri-

bution documentation may not be printed, copied or otherwise
reproduced, by any means, without the written permission of the
author and copyright holders.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, commercial vendors and distrib-
utors of "public domain" or user-supported software libraries
must obtain written permission to distribute copies of WinNav.
No one may use WinNav as a promotion for any commercial venture
or as an enticement for the user to pay for any program, product,
or service unless they have received the express written permis-
sion of the program's author.
In order to distribute WinNav, a dealer or disk vendor must com-
ply with the following conditions:
(1) You must obtain written permission from Richard S.
Patterson to distribute WinNav. If you receive no
reply, write again; my silence does not constitute
permission, and you may not distribute "pending"
receipt of permission.
(2) A maximum disk fee as set by Richard S. Patterson in
the vendor contract must not be exceeded. WinNav may
not be included on any disk sold for more than this
maximum, including CD-ROM or optical disks, without
express written permission from Richard S. Patterson.
(3) Vendors may not modify or delete any files on the
disk. Vendors may add a "GO" program, and/or a
reasonable number of small text files designed to
assist or provide a service to the user, but these
added files must be easily identifiable and end-users
must be allowed to delete the added files.
(4) Vendors must make a reasonable effort to distribute
only the most recent versions of WinNav. All vendors
who have requested and received written permission to
distribute WinNav will be notified of updates as they
are released.

-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
(5) All disk vendors must comply with any and all vendor
guidelines or vendor requirements set forth by the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP); for
more information about ASP, contact its chairman, Jim
Button, at Buttonware in Seattle, or ASP, located at
325 118th Ave. S. E., Suite 200, Belleview, WA 98005.
Violation of any ASP guideline or requirement auto-
matically revokes permission to distribute WinNav.
4.2. LIMITED EVALUATION LICENSE
The evaluation copy of WinNav is, for purposes of distribution, a
shareware product. It may be freely copied and distributed for
evaluation as long as four basic rules are followed. These rules
are:
(1) The program and this documentation may not be modi-
fied in any way.
(2) A copy of this documentation is provided with the
program.
(3) No charge, other than a media and handling charge not
to exceed $10.00, excluding actual postage, is made.
(4) Users of the program must purchase a Registered
User's License should they decide to use this prod-
uct.
One license per usable copy of WinNav is required, and the pro-
gram may not be used beyond a thirty (30) evaluation period
without registration. A single archive or backup copy is not
considered a "usable copy" for evaluation or registration pur-
poses.
Please note that if you purchased a disk containing this software
from a public domain/shareware software distributor you have paid
the media and handling charges as permitted above. This is not a
registered copy, and you have not purchased a Registered User's
License. Purchasing a license is required for continued use.

PAYMENT WITH ORDER INFORMATION
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
4.5. PAYMENT WITH ORDER INFORMATION
Under the "Payment with Order" plan we accept cash, money orders,
postal money orders and personal and business checks, subject to
clearance of funds.
4.5.1. Mail Orders
For mail order purchases, enclose the following items in an
envelope:
(1) A fully completed copy of the order form, appearing
at the end of this manual and
(2) Full payment by cash, check or money order made
payable to "RICHARD S. PATTERSON" (for your own
protection cash should not be sent through the mail
-- I can not be responsible for cash that gets
"lost" before I receive it),
addressed to:
Richard S. Patterson
P. O. Box 270492
Houston, Texas 77277
Licensing materials will generally be sent to you upon
clearance of funds, e.g., check or money order, or receipt of
cash.
4.5.2. No Phone Orders
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- ----------
As we are unable to process credit card orders at
this time, and require an executed copy of the regis-
tration form,
phone orders cannot be accepted.

4.6. PURCHASE ORDERS AN 111p151b D BILLING
Purchase orders are subject to acceptance, and may require an
advance deposit on large orders. Generally, purchase orders are
rejected of orders less than $250.00 -- even if they are from a
major national corporation or governmental agency; we are sorry,
but we cannot justify spending hours reading the often cryptic
language of multipage purchase orders for relatively small order
or single registrations.
Furthermore, purchase orders will not be accepted if they purport
to obligate us to your company's terms and conditions which are
contrary to those of our licensing agreements or disclaimer of
warranties.
As stated herein, there are no warranties whatsoever associated
with the Windows Navigator (WinNav) software product, and we are
not responsible for its performance. You are the sole judge of
the product's effectiveness and suitability for your particular
purposes, and are given an opportunity to pre-evaluate same via
shareware distribution.
To order WinNav, enclose the following items in an envelope:
(1) A fully completed copy of the order form, appearing
at the end of this manual
(2) Purchase order, stating, in clear and obvious type,
items and number of copies to be registered or pur-
chased, together with your shipping and billing
address, and
(3) Name, address and phone number of a knowledgeable
individual whom we may contact should any question
about this order arise,

4.7. INTERNATIONAL ORDERS
We recognizes the difficulties our international customers face
in presenting payment for our products. These difficulties
include excessive fees charged for international money orders,
postal delays and currency conversion problems of various types.
However, as we are unable to accept payment via MasterCard (Euro-
Card) or Visa at this time, we can only accept international
money orders or travelers checks payable in U. S. Dollars; you
must perform any necessary currency conversions on your end of
the transaction, and take any necessary steps to eliminate the
possibility of the loss of the funds by the postal services.
It is strongly recommended that international orders be paid by
Postal Money Orders, as these appear to be honored by most U.S.
post offices, or by drafts drawn on U.S. banks with preprinted
U.S. bank routing numbers.
An additional charge to cover postal fees and handling is
required on all international orders. All materials will be
mailed via airmail, whenever possible, thus avoiding many unnec-
essary delays. The additional fees as of the date of this manual
are as follows:

4.8. REGISTERED USER SUPPORT AND FEEDBACK
Registered users who do contribute will be notified when updates
and new products are available. Anyone wishing to offer advice
and suggestions are most welcome to do so.
Those of you who have registered your copy of WinNav, and wish to
receive an updated copy of the latest shareware version, can
always obtain a registered copy by mail; include the current disk
fee ($15.00 as of the date of this release) to cover materials,
postage and handling costs. In your request, please specify the
version and serial numbers of your current copy of WinNav, or
better yet, use the registration form included in this User's
Guide.
Optionally, you may include two (2) 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" diskettes
for each set ordered, together with a self-addressed stamped dis-
kette mailer (with adequate postage to cover the cost of each of
two (2) disk sets requested), plus $5.00 to cover handling, and I
will copy and send you the latest version of WinNav.
If there have not been any significant updates made since your
version, I will wait until the next release of WinNav to send
your update (if no updates are expected to be available in the
following 60 day period your payment and/or media will be
returned to you).
If you do have a question, a bug report, or suggestions for
future versions, please drop me a note, and include:
(1) A self addressed stamped envelope (if a reply is
required);
(2) The version and serial number of the copy of WinNav
that you are using, which appears on WinNav's "About"
dialog panel;

(4) Your hardware configuration (model, memory size,
printer, etc.); and
(5) Any Windows or standard DOS applications that you may
be running or have loaded under Windows at the time
you are running WinNav.
This information will help me to track any problems and to sug-
gest reasonable solutions to your problems.

In addition, I may be reached on The Fox Micro BBS in Houston,
Texas, where unregistered copies of the most recent release of
WinNav will be first posted. Fox Micro's BBS, in Houston, Texas,
can be accessed by calling (713) 859-9105 (Public Node) and (713)

Node generally requires payment of a membership fee; information
on obtaining membership is available on the Public Node. Those
interested in Microsoft Windows may find that the Windows and
OS/2 conference and file area on this board to be one of the best
and most active in the Houston area.

OTHER MATTERS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

VI. APPENDIX A
-------- ----- ------ ----- ----- --------- ----- --------
6.1. OTHER MATTERS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS
Again, WinNav is "Development-Ware" and is still evolving. Gen-
erally, no hidden features are implemented by registration that
are unimplemented in a current unregistered release, although
upon registration you may disable the display of the opening or
exit screens (which, obviously, is a plea to support this appli-
cation by registration should you decide to use it, but hopefully
aren't as demanding or obtrusive as some other popular Windows
applications which even contain third-party advertisements).
Many features are, however, currently under development, and many
more are finding its way on to an ever growing "wish list" for
enhancements.
Other future releases, it is hoped, will gradually reduce Win-
Nav's reliance on external DOS applications and utilities such as
XCopy, and certainly file and directory move and other file
management features will be added.
Other features, which have not yet been suggested or even thought
of, will certainly find their way into the Windows environment
and WinNav itself, provided the interest and support of each of
WinNav's users continues.

7.1. ORDER FORM FOR SINGLE USERS' LICENSE
Please use the following multipage form for registration and all
orders for disks or printed documentation. All information must
be completed fully.
Note that you can locate the version or release number of your
evaluation copy of The Navigator on both the sign-on display, and
on the "About" dialog display that can be accessed from the
"File" pull down menu bar. If you fail to include the version
number of your copy, we must assume that it is the same as the
number and date appearing in the footer at the bottom of each
page of this User's Guide -- this may not always be the same as
the application program you are presently using.
The following registration fees and forms supersede previous fees
and charges, and are effective as of the date of this release.
Registered user's will be provided with an authorization code,
that will allow them to disable the opening and closing prompts
that appear when The Navigator is run, as well as being provided
with announcements of future updates and releases. These autori-
zation codes are personal and unique, and may not be disclosed or
used by third-parties or on multiple copies of the application.
Hopefully, this will avoid the need in future release, to pur-
chase updated disk sets.
PLEASE NOTE THAT CORPORATE USERS AND GOVERNMENTAL UNITS OR AGEN-
CIES MAY NOT USE THE SINGLE?INDIVIDUAL USER ORDER FORM BUT MUST

extension when it attempts to load any internally defined stan-

Each of these are standard DOS applications that are invoked by
WinNav's launch of their respective PIF files. It should be
noted that WinNav looks for the *.PIF file extension rather
than the *.EXE or *.COM extension when it attempts to load any
internally defined standard DOS applications.

9.1.3. Convert File Utilities (optional)
In addition to the foregoing, the convert utility options also
will require the following utilities to fully support all
listed file compression formats; however, these additional uti-
lities are only used by the CVT.COM and CVT!.COM application
programs, and may be omitted if conversion of the indicated
formats are not required by the user.
Each of these are standard DOS applications that are invoked by
WinNav's launch of their respective PIF files. It should be

9.2. ADDITIONAL APPLICATIONS AND UTILITIES
Although the following applications are not required nor inter-
nally defined by WinNav, they can be used to fully exploit its
Launch and View Panels' capabilities. They are comprised of many
of the most popular and widely distributed public domain and
shareware DOS and Windows applications that are available today.
These applications are just a sampling of the utilities that can
be invoked by WinNav, and should not be considered to be a recom-
mendation or endorsement, nor should it be considered as an all
inclusive list of available public domain and shareware
applications suitable for use by any particular user.
Each of the standard DOS applications, indicated by an asterisk
("*") next to its name, should be loaded by WinNav's Launch or
View functions invocation of their respective PIF files; gener-
ally, the file name of the PIF file should be the same as that of
the executable program. The Windows applications do not require
PIF files, and may be invoked by directly calling the applica-
tion's file name and *.EXE extension.

DBB.EXE * 1.2 DataBase Browser an excellent and
relatively new list utility that
displays formatted fields and
records
stored in the dBase *.DBF file
format.
WP5LOOK.EXE * 1.0 Another excellent list utility
that displays WordPerfect for-
matted document files, and pro-
vides its own internal search
capabilities.
BROWSER.EXE 3.0 and 3.2 A Windows list utility that pro-
vides fine search, filter, format
and other capabilities -- its only
draw back is that it cannot load
large files as the entire file is
held in memory.
VIEW.EXE 2.0 demo A Windows text management applica-
tion that provides large file
viewer support, configurable
screen, print and other functions
-- its only draw backs are that it
will not allow a file to be loaded
as a command line parameter, and
will crash if an executable file
is loaded for viewing.
GCP.EXE 4.20SW An excellent Windows graphic
(f/k/a (also 4.10) viewer, manipulation and file con-
EASEL.EXE) version utility, which supports
Windows Paint (Old and New MSP),
Bitmap, Cursor and Icon, MacPaint

9.3. HOW TO OBTAIN APPLICATIONS AND UTILITIES
Many of the foregoing are shareware as well as public domain
applications. These applications, like Windows Navigator, may be
obtained from such sources as local bulletin board systems
(BBS's), friends, clubs and user groups, and even mail order pub-
lic domain distributions -- one such software library is men-
tioned earlier in this manual.
In addition, most of these are distributed (at least for a lim-
ited time), to registered users who purchase a disk copy of Win-
Nav; they are included free of charge on a separate Utility Disk,
together with any original on-disk documentation and other
information, distributed with WinNav's registered user disk.
Note, however, that shareware authors expect or at least hope to
get paid for their investment of time and labor in the develop-
ment of a particular application; "payment" generally means
direct payment to the author, and not to any third party or
distributor.
When you register WinNav, you have not paid for or obtained any
license to use any of the applications which might be contained
on the Utility Disk; these utilities change from time to time,
and are merely provided as a convenient way for you to sample
additional applications that are made available through their
respective authors.
Should any of these utilities be of use to you and wish to con-
tinue to use them, then you must comply with the license terms
and conditions and the registration instructions that are
included with each individual application. Furthermore, these
utilities are distributed "AS IS" and without any warranty what-
soever. Also note that while it is hoped that the utilities on

the whole represent the most current versions presently being
distributed by the author, more current versions may be available
through other sources.
Hopefully, from time to time, other shareware authors and regis-
tered users of WinNav, will pass on copies of WinNav's demo pro-
gram (not the registered copy please) to others, or will forward
new versions of their own utilities, viewers or other shareware
and public domain applications to us for review. If they are
found to be compatible with or otherwise complement the use of
WinNav, we in turn, will attempt to make them available to our
own registered users for their review.
