Win3xStart makes some changes to the file IO.SYS of DOS 7.10, allowing
you to install and run Windows 3.x in OSR2/Win98 DOS mode like in earlier
versions of Windows 95. Normally, Windows 3.x complains about an
incompatible DOS version. If you say: "Wait a minute: shouldn't I
re-install OSR2 over an existing DOS 6.x and then use the 'Previous
operating System' menu item in Windows 95 boot menu for that purpose ?" -
forget about it. This works for the first time attempt, but results in
COMPLETE boot failure the next time you reboot your machine. Dual boot is
officially not supported in OSR2. If you really need the dual boot
feature with a previous version of DOS, use the fix that I include in
directory DUALBOOT.BUG here. This installs MS-DOS 6.22 from the original
setup diskettes and fixes the dual boot failure simultaneously.
Note: Dual boot capability with earlier versions of DOS has been restored
in Windows 98.
How do you determine that you have OSR2 at all ? Go to a DOS prompt and
issue the command VER. Windows 95 OSR2 responds
Windows 95. [version 4.00.1111]
All earlier versions of Windows 95 display [... 4.00.950], you do not
need the patch there. If you plan to install Windows 3.x under such an
earlier (also known as 'retail') version of Windows 95, please read the
installation notes on Windows 3.x in this document carefully too.

Just start W3XSTART.EXE. The program gives you three options, "Apply
Changes", "Undo Changes" and "Exit". The first option saves the data to
be modified to the backup file W3XSTART.BIN in current directory and then
patches IO.SYS. The program looks for IO.SYS on C:\, if for any reason it
is not found there it prompt's you to enter a full path. In this case be
careful because any filename is accepted and minimal error testing is
done only by checking file size and searching for an OSR2/Win98 specific
string. Normally, IO.SYS is located in the root directory of your boot
drive with it's attributes set to Read Only, Hidden and System. But first
of all Win3xStart will check your DOS version and terminates if it's
different from 7.10 (OSR2/Win98).
The second option restores all changes from W3XSTART.BIN, the third
finally aborts the program without any actions.
Because IO.SYS is an Windows 95/98 system file that is used during boot
process, I strongly recommend to use Win3xStart from a Windows 95/98
floppy boot disk.

Please choose USER DEFINED SETUP (hope this is the correct term in
english). Choose a directory DIFFERENT from where Windows 95/98 is
installed. Then, at the end of setup, it is very important that you
answer
NO
when Setup asks you to update AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS ! Updating
these files by Windows 3.x will cause some DOS drivers from Windows 3.x
to appear there that are NOT compatible with DOS 7.10. These drivers
then replace the DOS 7.10 ones which may lead to the inability to start
EITHER Windows 95/98 OR Windows 3.x. After finishing setup, check once
again that there are NO drivers in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS that are
loaded from the Windows 3.x directory, especially HIMEM.SYS,
IFSHLP.SYS, SETVER.EXE and EMM386.EXE. All drivers must be by DOS 7.10
and therefore loaded from Windows 95/98 directory or it's COMMAND
subdirectory. Of course, this applies not to third party drivers that
are installed on your machine.
There is ONE exception: If you decide to use an startup menu in
CONFIG.SYS as recommended (see below), and ONLY then, you should load
IFSHLP.SYS from the Windows 3.x directory in the [DOS] section of
CONFIG.SYS. This allows to use the Windows 3.11 32bit disk access since
this is not available with the DOS 7.10 version of IFSHLP.SYS. In this
case it is not an good idea to start Windows 95/98 later from the DOS
prompt...
PLEASE NOTE ALSO: To create and use a permanent swap file in Windows
3.x you have to allow direct disk access by the command LOCK <DL>:
before starting Windows 3.x, where <DL> have to be replaced by the
drive letter where you want to create / use the permanent swap file.
Please read the warning LOCK displays carefully. After exiting Windows
3.x you should disallow direct disk access by UNLOCK <DL>: . Further,
you will not be able to create the permanent swap file on a logical
drive that resists in an extended partition that was created by the DOS
7.10 version of FDISK. These are normally drive letters D:, E: and so
on. This does not apply to FDISK of the retail version of Windows 95.

In order to avoid problems with Windows 3.x applications that scan for
system files such as WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI, the Windows 95/98 directory
should be removed from your PATH statement before starting Windows 3.x.
Because you have to start your computer in DOS mode to run Windows 3.x,
this can most easily done by a batch file that first modifies PATH and
then starts Windows 3.x. Assuming you have Windows 95 in C:\WINDOWS and
Windows for Workgroups in C:\WIN311, this would look like the following:

Now save this batch, e.g. as C:\BAT\WIN311.BAT, assuming you have a
directory C:\BAT. At least, the directory where you saved the batch
should be listed in your PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT , so you can
start Windows 3.x from any directory. Then start Windows 3.11 by typing
WIN311.
If you are still having problems (e.g Windows 3.x hangs at the splash
screen, then enter the line
DOS=NOAUTO
to your CONFIG.SYS. This prevents DOS 7.10 from loading FILES, BUFFERS
etc. to upper memory. Maybe Windows 3.x is sometimes confused about this.
IMPORTANT NOTE: DOS=NOAUTO also prevents automatic loading of HIMEM.SYS,
IFSHLP.SYS and SETVER.EXE during boot process. You have to manually enter
these drivers into CONFIG.SYS using the DEVICE / DEVICEHIGH command since
they are urgently NEEDED to start the Windows 95/98 GUI.
However, I strongly recommend using an startup menu in CONFIG.SYS like
the following (please note that the country specific settings are for
germany and that this is a SAMPLE configuration). A line beginning with

This gives you the choice between 'Windows 95' and 'DOS Mode for Windows
3.11' at startup, where Windows 95 is started automatically after 10
seconds (MENUDEFAULT). You can proceed using your selection in
AUTOEXEC.BAT by the environment variable CONFIG, which is now set to
either 'WIN95' or 'DOS':

Finally, to get this working, you have to enter 'BootGUI=0' (whithout the
quotes) to the [Options]-Section in C:\MSDOS.SYS. Otherwise Windows 95/98
would be started althoug 'DOS Mode' has been selected. (DOS 7.x simply
executes the command 'WIN' after finishing AUTOEXEC.BAT when BootGUI=1).
You may also disable the splash screen here by 'Logo=0' (whithout
quotes). Since MSDOS.SYS is normally hidden, the easiest way to edit this
file is to use the following commands in a DOS window or in DOS mode:
attrib c:\msdos.sys -h -r -s
edit c:\msdos.sys
attrib c:\msdos.sys +h +r +s
For your convience, I included the file MSDOSSYS.INF. Just right-click it
in Explorer and choose 'Install', it will modify MSDOS.SYS for you as
described. You can undo these changes in Control Panel - Software -
Install / Uninstall.
As you see, this all can result in really hard work !

Sometimes you may get an error message when exiting Windows 3.x like
"File allocation table bad" for some drive. Don't panic, this isn't true.
As a workaround, make sure that you start Windows 3.x from the root
directory of drive C:, e.g.:
C:
CD\
C:\WIN311\WIN.COM
If you use WIN311.BAT as described above, modify it accordingly.

Some programs (e.g. Microsoft Word 6.0) diplay the following error
message on startup:
YOU MUST EXIT WINDOWS AND LOAD SHARE.EXE IN ORDER TO RUN ....
Normally there should be no need to do this, since Windows 3.x has its
own virtual device driver, VSHARE.386, for file sharing purposes.
But it seems that there is something in the DOS 7.1 real mode kernel that
prevents this driver from proper function. Unfortunately, SHARE.EXE is
not shipped with Windows 95/98. You may try to use SHARE.EXE of your
old DOS 6.22 for instance (remember you have to modify the DOS version
passed to SHARE.EXE by SETVER SHARE.EXE 6.22), but unfortunately this
will not solve the problem too. This is because SHARE.EXE is not
supported in OSR2/Win98, see
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/peropsys/win95/kb/Q161/6/19.txt
for more information. Since the 'cheat' mentioned there doesn't work too,
it is currently not possible to run these programs.
