As Far As We Know
Units
Swordsmen
Swordsmen are the basic infantry unit. They start as simple peasants armed with crude swords. However as your blacksmiths discover new forging techniques the wealthier families (depending on the wages y 16316y245q ou set for various jobs.) will buy their sons better weapons and armor.[for the possible results of wages on military families see Government and Income]
Spearmen
Spearmen are the primary anti cavalry unit but they can also be used in a defensive way. This is done by placing spearmen at a choke point (gate or thin mountain pass) there by forcing them to march though a wall of spears. Spearmen start with no armor and hardly more than a sharpened stick. [The wealthy will afford better weapons and armor]
Archers
Archers are mainly used to defeat lightly armed infantry or stationary cavalry. They also have the ability to fire flaming arrows witch do extra damage and burn siege equipment. Unlike most normal units archers can go to academies and improve their skills (increasing accuracy to range ratio). Archers start with crude hunting bows and no warrior training. [The wealthy will afford better weapons, armor and training]
Crossbowmen
Crossbowmen are basically archers that do more damage, don't require training but have shorter range and smaller units (10 men per). Crossbow men are best used against men on walls because they can easily pierce shields and their bolts loose little altitude at only 100 yards. Crossbowmen only come from rich families because crossbows are expensive however this means they automatically have decent armor.
Light Lancers
Light lancers are the basic light cavalry unit. Light lancers are the fastest cavalry and therefore are great scouts. They also are effective at quickly out flanking enemy infantry formations. Light lancers have no better than chain mail vests but they can have superb cavalry spears and sleek horses. [Horses only come from certain areas and are expensive so only middle class families or richer can afford them]
Cataphracts
Cataphracts are heavy spear armed cavalry. They are armed with heavy spears and scale mail armor. They have a vary powerful charge and their armor means that they can even charge phalanxes. However their long spears this means that they aren't designed for prolonged close combat. [Horses only come from certain areas and are expensive so only middle class families or richer can afford them]
Husaria
Husaria are heavy cavalry armed with sabers and wear plate mail. These horsemen are relatively poor at charging but can easily follow a charge and kill enemies on either side. Also since they are armed with swords they can engage in close combat plus they can dis mount if their horse is hurt fight like a swordsman (they will join a swordsman unit afterwards). [Horses only come from certain areas and are expensive so only middle class families or richer can afford them]
