The Present Tense Indefinite

Este folosit cu:

• Actiuni obisnuite:

John smokes.  Hawks fly high. Mary plays the piano.

• Adevaruri general valabile:

Water boils at 100*C. The sun rises every morning. The grass is green.

• Actiuni care sunt stabile, pentru moment:

We live in London. John works in a factory.

• Cu actiuni viitoare, planuite (mai ales daca se refera la o calatorie sau daca timpul viitor este mentionat):

We leave for Budapest at 9 next week.   Tomorrow is Christmas.

• In propozitii secundare temporale in locul viitorului:

I'll tell him when I see him. She'll come back when she can.

• In propozitiile conditionale de tipul 1:

If the rain stops, we'll go on a trip.

• Cu sensul pe care il are Present Perfect (numai verbele: to hear, to forget, to learn, to be told):

I forget his name. I hear that he got married last week. Mary is told that her project has been accepted.

• Pentru a exprima un eveniment dramatic (de obicei in asociere cu Present Tense Continuous):

When they get there and unlock the door they see a girl sitting at the desk in the dark room. She seems very preoccupied and does not see the two men entering the room.

• Cu verbe de comunicare precum: to say, to advise, to tell, to warn etc. cand se cere sau se da un citat:

What does the book say? It says: Boil for half an hour. Shakespeare advises us not to borrow or lend.

• Se foloseste cu urmatoarele adverbe sau locutiuni adverbiale de frecventa:

always, never, occasionally, often, sometimes, usually, every day/week/month/year, on Mondays, on Sundays, twice a week/month/year etc.

We always go to church on Sundays. It rains a lot in summer and autumn.

• Este folosit adesea in titlurile de ziar:

Police apprehended the serial killer.
