Alberto Moravia
Italian novelist
He
was born as Alberto Pincherle, the husband of Elsa Morante, remarking
himself as one of the most important Italian novelists of the 20th
century. He made use of concise, realistic prose, in depicting issues such as
the relation of the individual to society. The Indifferent Ones (1929),
his first novel, he portrayed the Italian bourgeoisie at the beginning of
fascism. Moravia
also treated subjects as the conflict between the creation and the sensual,
within the general frame of the modern people's apathy and despair (The
Empty Canvas - 1960. His characters have lost faith in all moral values. Two
Women (1957), one of his novels, was transformed into a film in 1961. Other
important works of the author are Disobedience (1948), The Conformist
(1951), A Phallic Novel (1972), the short-story collection Bought and
Sold (1970, translated in 1973), and the essay collection Which Tribe Do
You Belong To?
