There are quite a few options for exporting as vector files. This is very helpful for placing FreeHand artwork in page layout programs or for working with other applications.
To export as EPS files:
1.   23423f514x ; Choose one of the following formats:
o   23423f514x ; Generic EPS saves vectors in an Encapsulated PostScript file without any preview. This is the smallest format but is difficult to work with in page layout programs.
o   23423f514x ; Macintosh EPS (Win) saves EPS file with a PICT preview.
o   23423f514x ; MS-DOS EPS (Mac) saves the EPS file with a TIFF preview.
o   23423f514x ; EPS with TIFF preview (Win) also saves the EPS file with a TIFF preview.
o   23423f514x ; QuarkXPress EPS saves the file in the best possible format for importing into QuarkXPress.
o   23423f514x ; DCS2 EPS creates a pre-separated EPS that is usually used with OPI pre-press software.
2.   23423f514x ; Click the Setup button to select the other options
3.   23423f514x ; Choose Include FreeHand document to add the native FreeHand document to the EPS file. This makes it possible to edit the file later using FreeHand.
4.   23423f514x ; Choose Include Fonts in EPS to add the font information necessary to print the file. (See the sidebar on this page for an explanation of what including the fonts means.)
5.   23423f514x ; Choose the color conversion as follows:
o   23423f514x ; CMYK for standard process output and color separations.
o   23423f514x ; RGB for use in an image-editing application such as Macromedia Fireworks.
o   23423f514x ; CMYK and RGB for print applications with a PostScript RIP such as Illustrator or Photoshop 4 or higher.
What does it mean to include fonts? What does it mean when you include fonts in an exported EPS file? As discussed in Chapter 19, when you open a FreeHand file that uses fonts that are not installed on your computer, you get a warning dialog box. This lets you know that if you don't have the original fonts in the file, the text will not display correctly unless you change the fonts. So does that mean that if you include the fonts with an EPS, you don't get any warning? Can you work without installing those fonts? No, no, no! Absolutely not! All it means is that there is enough information about the font to print the file. But there is not enough information to edit the file later. In order to edit the file you most definitely need to install the proper font. The Include font option helps those who send their EPS files for placement in newspapers and magazines. Those publications may not have the fonts installed. They can print the file, but they can't open and edit it without the fonts installed. |
Working with Other Vector ProgramsHowever, what if you need to send your FreeHand files to someone who uses CorelDraw or Deneba Canvas? Don't panic just because there isn't any export option for CorelDraw or Canvas. Most other vector programs allow you to open Illustrator files. So, check with the person you're working with and find out if their version of the program can open Illustrator files. Although you may find some special features such as transparency lenses or envelopes are converted to ordinary objects, most likely you will be able to transfer most of the information to the other program. That's one of the reasons Macromedia has included the Illustrator 1 format. Almost all vector drawing programs can open that basic file format. Although FreeHand doesn't export in the CorelDraw format, you can import uncompressed CorelDraw 7 and 8 files. |
You can also save FreeHand files in formats compatible with previous versions of the program. This helps you work with people who do not have FreeHand 10.
To export as FreeHand files:
·   23423f514x ;   23423f514x ; Choose one of the following formats:
o   23423f514x ; FreeHand 5.x document for use with FreeHand 5 and 5.5.
o   23423f514x ; FreeHand 7 document for use with FreeHand 7.
o   23423f514x ; FreeHand 8 document for use with FreeHand 8.
o   23423f514x ; FreeHand 9 document for use with Freehand 9.
TIP
There are no Setup options for the FreeHand file formats.
Despite a fierce competition between Freehand and Illustrator, Macromedia lets you convert FreeHand files to Illustrator files.
To export as Illustrator files:
1.   23423f514x ; Choose one of the following formats:
o   23423f514x ; Adobe Illustrator 1.1T for use with the oldest versions of Illustrator and Macromedia FreeHand. (Ironically, Illustrator no longer exports in this file format.)
o   23423f514x ; Adobe Illustrator 88T for use with the second version of Illustrator.
o   23423f514x ; Adobe Illustrator® 3 for use with Illustrator 3 (Mac) or Illustrator 4 (Win).
o   23423f514x ; Adobe IllustratorT 5.5 for use with Illustrator 5.5.
o   23423f514x ; Adobe IllustratorT 7.x for use with Illustrator 7.
2.   23423f514x ; If you choose Illustrator 7, click the Setup button to set the options as follows
o   23423f514x ; CMYK for standard process output and color separations.
o   23423f514x ; RGB for use in an image-editing application such as Macromedia Fireworks.
o   23423f514x ; CMYK and RGB for print applications with a PostScript RIP such as Illustrator or Photoshop 4 or higher.
FreeHand also lets you save documents as Adobe Acrobat PDF (portable document format) files. This file format allows anyone who has the Acrobat Reader application to open your files. In addition, the PDF format compresses files so they take up the smallest amount of space.
To export an Acrobat PDF:
1.   23423f514x ; Choose PDF from the Format pop-up menu.
2.   23423f514x ; Click the Setup button to open the PDF Export box
3.   23423f514x ; Set the Color Image Compression.
4.   23423f514x ; Set the Grayscale Image Compression.
TIP
Choose None if the PDF file will be used for professional printing. This ensures that all the information is retained in the file.
5.   23423f514x ; Set the Compatibility choose which version of Acrobat can open the file.
TIP
Choose a lower version of Acrobat if you are unsure of what version of Acrobat Reader will be used to open the file.
6.   23423f514x ; Check which options you want applied to the PDF:
o   23423f514x ; Compress text and graphics reduces the file size even further.
o   23423f514x ; ASCII format PDF may be required when sharing PDF files on older networks and e-mail systems.
o   23423f514x ; Editable text format allows the text to be changed in the PDF.
o   23423f514x ; Export notes converts any notes added in the Note text box in the Navigation panel into PDF annotations
o   23423f514x ; Export URLs converts any URLs as PDF links.
o   23423f514x ; Embed fonts embeds the fonts used in the file. This ensures the document appears exactly as you created it.
What about Flash? There's still one more vector file format that FreeHand lets you export - the Macromedia Flash (SWF) format. SWF is the vector file format that is used for Web graphics, animations, and page layout. It has become one of the most important elements of creating Web pages. Because working with Flash files is so important, exporting in the SWF format is covered in Chapter 29 |
